About us

Who we are

Houston County Genealogy is a nonprofit genealogy society made up of volunteers, local historians, family researchers, and community members who believe the stories of the past deserve to be preserved and shared. We are united by the idea that every family record, cemetery inscription, photograph, and handwritten note can help reconnect people with their roots and strengthen the memory of a community.

Our society began with a small group of local history enthusiasts who saw how easily important records and family stories could disappear over time. What started as an effort to document surnames, transcribe cemeteries, and organize regional archives gradually grew into a broader mission to support anyone interested in tracing their ancestry and understanding the people who shaped Houston County’s history.

As interest grew, so did our work. We expanded our projects to include record indexing, educational workshops, research support, oral history collection, and preservation initiatives. Today, Houston County Genealogy serves as a welcoming place for beginners, experienced researchers, and families who simply want to learn more about where they come from.

Our approach

Our Mission
Our mission is to preserve local family history, improve access to genealogical resources, and support individuals in their search for meaningful historical connections.

We work to make genealogy more approachable by offering guidance, educational opportunities, and community-driven projects that keep important records visible and usable for future generations.

Whether someone is searching for an ancestor’s name, exploring a family cemetery, trying to understand regional migration patterns, or piecing together a long-forgotten branch of the family tree, we aim to provide support that is practical, respectful, and rooted in careful historical work.

Our Vision
We want to build a stronger culture of historical preservation in which family stories, local records, and community memory are not lost with time.

Our vision is a future where more people can access their heritage, understand their place in history, and contribute to preserving the stories that make Houston County unique.

We believe genealogy does more than document names and dates. It helps connect generations, preserve identity, and create a deeper understanding of how communities were formed. By expanding access to records and encouraging public involvement, we hope to keep this work active, inclusive, and meaningful for years to come.
