Mrs. Emma Judith Shearer
BAY CITY: Mrs. Emma Judith Shearer, 86, died Wednesday. Survivors:
Daughters, Mrs. Mary Mount, Bay City, and Mrs. Hannah Long, Houston; sons,
Jimmie H. Shearer, Bay City, John M. Shearer, Baytown, Titus Shearer,
Lufkin, Harvey F. Shearer, Houston and Rev. Huss Shearer, Texarkana,
sisters, Anine Schroeder, Dallas, Lillian Edwards, Sealy; brother, M. D.
Morehead, Angleton, 25 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Billie Jean Sanders
Mrs. Billie Jean Sanders of Houston died in Houston hospital 8:30 a.m.
Sunday. She had lived in the Crockett area the last 9 years. A member of
the Baptist Church. Survivors: 3 sons, Gary Lee, Fort Worth, James R., US
Navy and Jody of Houston. 2 daughters Mrs. Tonia Jean Minter of Ft. Worth
and Mrs. Connie Taylor of Houston, brother, John R. Niebaum of Houston and
a sister Mrs. Audrey Highhouse of New Port, Kentucky, 4 grandchildren.
Mr. Boone Bell Taylor
Mr. Boone Bell Taylor, 63, of Rt. @, Kennard, died Sunday in a local
hospital, following an extended illness.
Mr. Taylor, a farmer and rancher, was a member of the County Line Baptist
Church, and a member and past worshipful master of Coltharp Lodge N. 419,
AF & AM, of Kennard. He was born Oct. 11, 1902, in Trinity County.
Funeral services were held in the Calvary Baptist Church of Nogalus Prairie
at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Frank Oswald officiating. Burial was in
the Calvary Cemetery. Graveside rites were conducted by the Masonic Lodge
of Kennard.
Pallbearers were James Ellisor, Wilmer B. Taylor, Roy Ellisor, Wayne M.
Davis, Milton B. Greenville, and Walter Adams.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Boone Taylor of Kennard; a son, Jimmy, of
Kennard; a daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Jones of Virginia Beach, Va.; three
sisters, Mrs. George Ellisor of Kennard and Mrs. Johnnie Greenville and
Mrs. Alline Hathorn, both of Baytown; two ste-brothers, Ovid Helton of
Kennard and Lonnie Helton of Houston; a step-sister, Mrs. Cleo Guines; and
five grandchildren.

Mrs. Mattie Burton Ellis
Mrs. Mattie Burton Ellis, 94, of Houston, died in a Houston hospital Friday
following a short illness.
Mrs. Ellis was born in Houston County on Dec. 31, 1869, but had lived in
Houston the last 14 years. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m.
Sunday, with the Reverends A. S. Lee and Andrew Byers officiating.
Interment was in Evergreen Memorial park.
Pallbearers were John King, Nathan Shroyer, Sam Grundy, Jimmie Driskell, T.
J. "Spud" Tunstall, and T. D. Craddock.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harvey Bayne of Crockett; five
grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Virgil Otis Kinsel
Mr. Virgil Otis Kinsel, 53, of Lovelady, died suddenly around 1 p.m.
Saturday.
Mr. Kinsel was born in Houston County and had lived in this area his entire
life.
Funeral services were held from the Waller Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m.
Monday, with Mr. John Short officiating. Burial was in the Clapp Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Gladys Mae Kinsel of Lovelady; a son,
Howard Kinsel of Crockett; two daughters, Mrs. Marie Hare of Hempstead and
Mrs. Joyce Moore of Crockett; a brother, Oscar Ottis Kensel of Trinity; and
six grandchildren.

Mr. Robert Benard Rowe of Trinity, died Saturday morning in a Huntsville
hospital.
Mr. Rowe had lived in Trinity the last 29 years. He was a member of the
Carlisle Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, in the Carlisle Community
Church, with Rev. Smith officiating. Burial was in the Carlisle Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Era Bell Rowe of Trinity; four sons,
Melvin J. and Charles Allen, both of Houston, Philip of Sebastropol and
Robert Dean of Trinity; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Louise Mesecke of Trinity;

Mrs. Lula Beeson Hague, 84, of Crockett, died Monday morning in a local
nursing home.
Mrs. Hague was a lifelong resident of Houston County. She was a member of
the First Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Waller Funeral Home
Chapel, with Rev. Ed Mace officiating. Burial was in the Rice Cemetery.
Survivors include the husband, Charlie Hague of Crockett; a son, John
Beeson Hague of Galveston; her step-mother, Mrs. Cal Beeson of Crockett;
five brothers, W. H. Cleon and Joe W. Beeson, all of Crockett, James L.
Beeson of Austin and J. E. Beeson of Manor; two sisters, Mrs. Luther Warner

Elkhart Rites For Mr. Davis
Funeral services for Jaessie William Davis, 48, of Route 2, Elkhart, were
held Thursday, October 31, at 10:00 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church, Palestine, with the Rev. E. J. Brumleu officiating. Final rites
were held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at the graveside in Williamson Settlement
Cemetery, under the direction of Hassell & Foster.
A rosary was recited Wednesday. October 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Hassell &
Foster Chapel, Palestine, led by Father Brumleu.
Pallbearers were Robert Goodman, Larry Taylor, Alton Doucette, Larry Davis,
Buford Buford and David Banks.
Mr. Davis was born February 6, 1926 in Orange County, Texas to the late
William Perry Davis and Ollie Hock Davis, and he was pronounced dead on
arrival at a Grapeland hospital Tuesday, October 29, at 12:20 p.m. He was a
member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Palestine, and of American
Legion Post No. 552, of Sheldon, Texas. During World War I(I, he served in
the U.S. Navy from July 15, 1942, until Nov. 21 1945. A heavy duty
mechanic, he was last employed by Joopers Industries of Bakersfield,
California. He formerly lived in Slocum, and returned to Anderson County in
Feb. 1974.
Survivors: wife, Mrs. Henrietta Boudreaux Davis, Elkhart; two sons, William
Davis and Grant Davis, both of Elkhart; four daughters, Mrs. Elbert M.
(Mary Ellen) Horn of Grapeland, Mrs. Jerry (Jean) Taylor of Slocum, Misses
Charlotte, and Cecilla Davis, both of Elkhart; a brother, Harold Davis, of
Highlands; four grandchildren, Larry and Glenn Taylor, both of Slocum.
Becky and Christy Horn, both of Grapeland, numerous nieces and nephews.

Willie Ratcliff
Mr. Willie Ratcliff of Cleburne died July 19 in the Vererans Administration
Hospital in Dallas
Mr. Ratcliff was born Feb. 15, 1918, near Augusta.
Funeral services were held at Cleburne, with the Rev. Ben Loring of Dallas
and the Rev. Charles Taylor of Cleborne officiating. Graveside ceremonies
were conducted by American Legion Post No. 50 of Cleburne. Burial was in
Rosehill Memorial park in Cleburne.
Survivors include the wife Mrs. Doris Ratcliff, and two sons, Lanney and
Danney, all of Cleburne; a brother, Lester Glen, of Houston; three sisters.
Mrs. Sam Huffaker and Mrs. Fred Johnson, both of Houston, and Mrs. J. A.
Riley of Bay City.

Mrs. Annie A. Hall
Mrs. Annie A. Hall, 87, of Crockett, died in Memorial Hospital in Lufkin
Tuesday, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Hall, born in Limestone County March 25, 1878, had lived in this
county for over 50 years. She was a member of the Full Gospel Church of
Crockett.
Funeral services will be held from the Callaway Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m.
Thursday, with Dr. G. H. Stieglitz, Full Gospel minister, officiating.
Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors include a son, Floyd Birdwell of Rosharon; a daughter, Mrs. L. B.
Vest of Crockett; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchiildren.

Mrs. Marion Browning
Friends of Mrs. Marion Browning will regret to learn that she passed away
in Pasadena, Texas, July 13. She was the wife of the late Marion Browning,
who for years was pastor of the First Christian Church in Crockett. She was
79 years old. She resided with her daughter, Mrs. H. C. Franks, at 716
Williams St. Her son, Walter, lives in Austin. Mrs. Browning is also
survived by a brother, Amardo Gallardo, of Cuba, and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were in Richmond, TExas, at the Morton Cemetery Co.

James Hardy Platt, Sr.
Mr. James Hardy Platt Sr. 86, of Lovelady died in a Houston hospital
Saturday morning. Mr. Platt, a lifelong resident of Houston County, was a
member of the Christian Church and of the Lovelady Lodge No. 539, AF & AM.
Funeral services were held from the Waller Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday,
with Mr. Dalton Graves officiating, assisted by Mr. Don Crafton. Burial was
in the Center Hill Cemetery, under the auspices of Lovelady Lodge No. 539.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Minnie Ola Platt of Lovelady; eight sons,
W. H., J. C., Edgar and Marshall M. Platt, all of Baytown, Joe Bell Platt
of Lovelady. Robert Platt of Dallas, Sam B. Platt of Seattle, Wash., and J.
H. Platt Jr., of LaMarque; four daughters, Mrs. Jesse Waller of Rosharon,
Mrs. Lloyd Janes of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Fred S. Williams of LaMarque and
Mrs. Bobby Tunstall of Duncan, Okla; a sister, Mrs. Asa High of Tyler; 21
grandchildren; eight great grandchildren.

Mr. Jim Walter Bennett, 72, of Rt. 4, Crockett, died Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Bennett was a native of Bosque County, but had lived in Houston County
most of his life. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Waller Funeral Home
Chapel, with Rev. Leslie L. Grounds officiating. Burial was in the Weches
Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Fannie Jane Bennett of Crockett; foru
sons, L. C. and Cecil Bennett, both of Crockett, Clifford Bennett of
Ratcliff and Walter Doyle of Orchard; a daughter, Mrs. Edith Dewbre of
Denver City; 11 grandchildren; one great grandchild.

William Franklin Selkirk
Funeral services for William Franklin Selkirk, 72 of Grapeland, were held
wednesday, July 21, at 4 p.m. in the First Methodist Church, Grapeland,
with Rev. Loois Hunter and Rev. J. T. Riley officiating. Burial followed in
Grapeland City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Charlie Darsey, Mike Dailey, Leon Brimberry, Jack
Long, Earl Cheatham Homer Jones, Earl Pennington and Harvey Huff.
All friends of the family were named homorary pallbearers.
Native and lifelong resident of Grapeland, Mrs. Delkirk was born July 10,
1893, and prior to retiring, he was a trucking contractor. member of the
First Methodist Church, Grapeland, he died Tuesday, July 20, at 2:45 p.m.
in his home following a lengthy illness.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Emma Williams Selkirk; a daughter, Mrs.
Pauline Burnett; a grandson, Bill Burnett, all of Grapeland; two brothers,
John B. Silkirk of Mineola and Ainsworth Selkirk of Baytown.

Mrs. Alyth Brunow Austin, 55, of Houston, and former resident of Crockett
an dHouston County, died in Houston Friday, Dec. 7, following an extended
illness.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the
Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Hunter Morris officiating.
Mrs. Austin, who was born on Aug. 7, 1907, is survived by her husband, D.
D. Austin Sr. of Houston; a son, D. D. Jr., of Houston; a brother H. F.
Brunow Jr. of Houston; and four grandchildren.

Stephen Lemuel Callaway, two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Callaway
of Houston, died in a Houston hospital Sunday, Dec 9.
Besides the parents, survivors include a brother, Lester H. Callaway III of
Houston ; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Lester H. Callaway of Houston, and Mrs.
Raye Pigue of Houston; and great-grandmother Mrs. Sallye Callaway of
Crockett.
Funeral services were held from the Callaway Funeral Home Chapel in Houston
at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, with the Rev. Harold Fagan officiating,
andinterment was in the Forest park Cemetery in Houston.

Mrs. Edna Earl Williams, 79, died early Tuesday morning in a local
hosptial. A lifelong resident of Houston County, she was a member of the
First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Aubrey Williams of Springfield, Va.; three
daughters, Mrs. Ennis Chapman, and Mrs. Ray Prim, Houston, and Mrs. Delbert
Farek of Crockett; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 33 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, from the Waller
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. E. P. Ramsey and Rev. A. S. Lee
officaiting. Interment was in the Evergreen, Cemeteery.

Travis Pelham
Funeral services for Mr. Travis Pelham, 55, of Palestine, were held Sunday,
December 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Crockett Road Church of Christ, Palestine,
with the minister, Archie Waldrum, officiating. Burial was in Roselawn
Park, Palestine.
A native of Houston County, Mr. Pelham was born October 23, 1907, son of
the late John M. Pelham. He moved from Crockett to Palestine in 1956, and
at the time of his death was employed as a salesman for Western Auto
Associate Store. Member of the Crockett Road Church of Christ, he died
Friday December 7, at 8:30 a.m. following a sudden illness.
Survivors wife, Mrs. Kathryn Dear Pelham of Palestine; a daughter, Miss
Janyth Lynn Pelham of Palestine; two brother, Atmar Pelham of Grapeland and
Ottis Pelham of Lamesa; two sisters, Mrs. Julian Walling of Tyler and Mrs.
Fred Rosprim of Palestine; an aunt, Mrs. Jane Harrison of Dallas, and an
uncle Sam Caskey of Grapeland and a number of nieces and nephews.

Walter William Gossett
Mr. Walter William Gossett, 87, died Thursday, November 22 at a local
hospital hollowing a short illness. The retired farmer was born on November
15, 1875, in Crockett.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ida Mae Hale Gossett of Crockett, two
daughters, Mrs. Wilsie Maye White of Houston and Mrs. Robbie White of
Galena Park; three brothers, Trink, Andy and Wilsie Gossett all of
Crockett; one sister Hula; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the Calvary Baptist Church on November 23 at
2 p.m. with Revs. W. A. Corley and Deward Mullens. Interment was held in
the Evergreen, Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Elbert Burks, Mayse Hale, Doxier Gossett, Everett Davis,
Eugene Sawyer and George Lane.
Honarary pallbearers were Dr. A. B. Brown, Dr. C. B. Goolsby, Leonard
Arnold, W. F. Killingsworth, W. E. Hall, George Lane, Bill Lane, Jack

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with mr. M. E. Gimon and Mr. Darryl W. Pringle, both of Lovelady,
officiating. Burial was in the Lovealdy Cemetery.

Oliver Dennis Clemments
Mr. Oliver Dennis Clements, 49, of Amarillo, died Saturday morning in the
Veterans Hospital in Houston. Mr. Clements was owner of the Spot Recreation
Club in the Amarillo Building. He was born in Crockett, but had lived in
Amarillo the last 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II.
Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Blackburn-Shaw Funeral
Home in Amarillo.
Survivors include the wife; Inez; and a daughter, Joan both oof Amarillo;
four brothers, Jimmie Clements of Anchorage, Alaska, Neal and Albert
Clements of Crockett, and Lester Clements of El Dorado Ark; three sisters,
Mrs. Viola Davis of Crockett, Mrs. Ruby Blackwell of Lefors and Mrs. Anzo
Hoar of Houston.

Mrs. Mary Sue Waybourn
Mrs. Mary Sue Waybourn, 64, of Rt. 1, Crockett, died Sunday in a Houston
hospital, following an extended illness. Mrs. Waybourn was born May 6,
1900, in Pocahontas, Ark. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesady from the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with mr. James Mosely of the Grapeland Church of Christ,
officiating. Burial was in the New Energy Cemetery.

Holder of Tulsa, Oka; three sisters, Mrs. Henry Barnes of Cropus Christi,
Mrs. Virgil Cone of Alice and Mrs. Calvin Barnes of Bartlesville, Okla; and
nine grandchildren.

Silas Norman Tipton
Mr. Silas Norman Tipton, 77, of Rt. 2, Trinity, died Thursday, Sept. 10, at
his home near Trinity following a sudden illness.
Mr. Tipton was born Dec. 3, 1886, in Trinity County.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Chita Baptist
Church, with Rev. James Crawford, pastor on the church officiating. Burial
was in the Chita Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: D. J. Jerdan, Roy Tipton, Edmon Tipton, Theo Jordan, Ray
Tipton, and Leo Higgins.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Ione Tipton of Trinity; and a foster
daughter, Mrs. Cladys Myers of Houston.

Mrs. Ada May Smith
Mrs. Ada May Smith, 83, of Abilene, died at her home in Abilene Wednesday,
Sept. 16, following an extended illness. mrs. Smith was born in Houston
County July 26, 1881. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held in the Grapeland Church of Christ at 4:30 p.m.
Friday with Mr. Ralph Byers and Mr. Woodrow Pringle officiating. Burial was
in the Parker Cemetery, west of Grapeland.
Pallbearers were; Cabern Masters, H. C. Bynum, C. E. Bynum, Odell Herod,
Bill Herod, and Johnny Smith.
Survivors include the husband, A. A. Smtih of Alilene; two sons, Arlen
Smith of Uvalde and Horace Smith, of New Braunfels; six daughters; Mrs. R.
B. Wade and Miss Dolly Smith, both of Abilene, Mrs. W. C. Nicholas of
Baytown, Mrs. O. B. Irwin of Mt. Judea, Ark. Mrs. Ralph Byers of Ballinger
and Mrs. Jess Mitchell of Copperas Cove; three brothers, Jim and Otis
Herod, both of Grapeland, and Horace Herod of Albany; four sisters, Mrs. B.
T. Masters of Jacksonville, Mrs. Lydia Bynum and Mrs. Robert Montgomery,
both of Grapeland, and Mrs. Sis Smith of Ponts; 19 grandchildren, and 22
great-grandchildren.

James Olney McLean
Mr. James Olney McLean, 64, retired rural mail carrier and prominent farmer
and rancher, died in a local hosptial Thursday, Dec. 22, after a short
illness.
A vereran of World War I, Mr. McLean was born in Houston County on Jan. 16,
1896. He was a member of the Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 24, in the Callaway
Memorial Chapel with the Reverends C. A. West, A. S. Lee, and Bill Robinson
officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers were
James William McLean, Will McLean, George E. McLean, Bobby Lane, Tom
Rhoden, and West Lawson Jr.
Mr. McLean is survived by his wife, Mrs. J. O. McLean; two daughters, Miss
Dorothy Ellen McLean, and Mrs. Donn Currey; two brothers; William McLean
and Harry McLean; and two grandchildren, all of Crockett.

John Hicks Frizzell
Mr. John Hicks Frizzell, 75 year-old retired farmer of Crockett, died in
Rusk Saturday, Dec. 24, following a brief illness.
Graveside funeral services were held at the Hicks Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Monday, Dec 26, with the Rev. Albert Higginbotham officiating. Pallbearers
were Joe Smith, Jimmy Frizzell, Mack Frizzell, Booth Frizzell, Roy Bob
Frizzell, and Abbie Frizzel.
Born on March 7, 1883, in Houston County, Mr. Fizzell was a member of the
Metehodist church. He is survived by four brothers, Tom, D. C. and Ed, all
of Houston, and Monroe, of Pasadena; and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Smith of
Houston and Mrs Irene Stepherson of Pasadena.

Adolph Vanhowten
Mr. Adolph Vanhowten, 42, of Route 2, Trinity, died at his residence
Tuesday, Dec. 29.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec 23, at the Fields Store
Church near Waller, with the Rev. J. P. Jones of the First Baptist Church
of Waller, officiating. Interment was in the fields Store Cemetery, and
pallbearers wre Virgil Reynolds, Hubert Robinson, Orval Hones, Jimmie
Goodney, Buck Anderson and charlie B. Clepper.
Mr. Vanhowten was born on July 21, 1918, in Yarber, Texas. He was a veteran
of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eva Mae Vanhowten of Trinity; a son,
Vance, of Trinity, father, Rube Vanhowten of Cypress; two brothers, Othal
of Cypress and George of Liberty; five sisters, Mrs. Mamie Carraway of
Montgomery, Mrs. Marie Armer and Mrs.Ruby Allgood of Richmond, Mrs.
Caludine Sparks and Mrs. Merline Lands of Houston.

Ernest D. Estell
Mr. Ernest D. Estell died Thursday, Dec 22. He was 48 years odl and a
farmer.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the Creek
Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. G. H. Stieglitz officiating. Interment followed.
Mr. estell is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Estell of
Mapleton; his wife, Mrs. Eline Estell of Austinio; five sons, Wilford,
Billy, Fred, Raymond, and William, all of Austonio; two brothers, Herman
and Willard Estell both of Mapleton; and a sister Mrs. Lucille Stevenson of
New Caney.

Tom Smith Kent, Jr.
Funeral services for Tom Smith Kent, Jr., 69, of Grapeland, was held at
2:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec 22, in the First Baptist Church Grapeland. Rev.
Bland Kerby officaited and burial ws in the Grapeland City, Cemetery.
Pallbearers were G. L. Streetman, Barnett Jordan, George Murray, V. E.
Murray, Kelly Chapman andWarren Baker.
Mr. Kent died following a long illness at 10:27p.m. Tuesday, Dec 20, in a
Crockett hospital. He as born on Oct. 18, 1891, in the Reynard community of
Houston County. He was a retired merchant of Grapeland and also was
postmaster for twelve years.
Survivors are this widow, Mrs. Hazel Gentry Kent of Grapeland; seven sons,
Donald Kent of Bakersville, Calif., Charles Kent of Crockett, Tom S. Kent
III, and Dan G. Kent, both of Ft. Worth, Richard H. Kent of Mission, Kan.,
Harry D. Kent of Phoenix, Ariz., and Pat A. Kent of Grapeland; three
daughters, Mrs. Howell H. Smith of Webster, Mrs. Ernest E. Seamon of
Houston, Mrs. Montague E. Davis of New York City, N.Y.; one brother,
Leonard Kent of Eldorado, Texas; fifteen granchildren; six
great-granchildren.
