P.F.C. Allen S. Dunbar

Army PFC Allen S. Dunbar, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Dunbar of 107
West 17th Houston, formerly of Crockett, was killed in action in Viet Nam
Aug. 29.

PFC Dunbar was born in Houston County, July 27, 1947, and lived in Houston
County until 1956, when he moved to Houston with his parents. He was a
member of the 14th Baptist Church. He attended Reagan High School before
entering the service Dec. 1, 1967. He went to Viet Nam in early May, and
was with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Military graveside funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the
Conner Cemetery, with the Rev. R. J. Rodgers officiating. Military
personnel from Fort Hood were pallbearers.

Survivors include the parents; five sisters, Mrs. Rosa Loviette, Mrs.
Elizabeth Lee, Mrs. Emma Sue Hilborn, Mrs. Estelle Sexton and Mrs. Faye
Coker; four brothers, John, Bill, David and Darrell Dunbar, three nieces,
five nephews, all of Houston; several aunts and uncles.

Mrs. W. C. (Mamie) Duncan

Funeral services for Mrs. W. C. (Mamie) Duncan, 78, wre held at 2 p.m.
Monday from the Callaway Memorial Chapel.

Rev. Oscar Lock and Rev. Bob Lewis officiated. Burial was in the Ivie
Cemetery.

Mrs. Duncan, a resident of Kennard, died Jan. 18, in Lufkin. She was born
Aug. 12, 1896 in Pennington and had lived in Kennard for the past 47 years.
She was a member of the Community Full Gospel Church of Kennard.

Survivors include her husband, W. C. Duncan of Kennard; two sons, Johnny
Duncan of Crockett, and Homer Duncan of Lufkin.

Also, five sisters, Mrs. Lon Hughes of Chester, Mrs. Lena Matchett of
Angleton, Mrs. Iona Parks of Palestine, Mrs. Lela Rice and Mrs. Iola
Edward, both of Kennard; a brother, Frank W. Ripley of Nederland, seven
grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were James Duncan, Junior Duncan, Kenneth Ripley, Paul Dean, J.
L. Dean, Rayford Campbell, Donald Hughes, and Charlie Fairchild.

Mrs. Leona Myrtle Dunn

Mrs. Leona Myrtle Dunn, 69, of 902 San Jacinto, Crockett, passed away
Sunday, Aug. 6, in Houston County Hospital.

Mrs. Dunn, a retired school teacher, was born may 26, 1903, in Houston
County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Crockett.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with Rev. Richard Hume of the Lovelady Methodist Church
officiating. Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers wre R. B. Hall Jr., C. R. Attaway, Jr., David Attaway, Bruce
Attaway, G. H. Foster and L. T. Morgan.

Survivors include a son, James A. Dunn of Waco; three brothers, A. B. Hall
of Porter, W. L. Hall of Houston and R. B. Hall of Pasadena; a sister, Mrs.
Effie Sellers of Houston; a grandson, James A. Dunn Jr. of Beaumont; a
granddaughter, Vickie Dunn of Beaumont.

Rites Held For Edgar Dunnam

Mr. Edgar Dunnam

Funeral services for Mr. Edgar Dunnam, 73, of Grapeland were held Tuesday,
April 2, at 4 P.m. in the Guiceland Chapel. Mr. Calvin Dickey officiated
the services with burial in Guiceland Cemetery.

Pallbearers wre George Gaines, Howard Dennam, Jr., Harold Starkey, Earnest
Brown, Johnny Wilkins and Clyde Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Zelma Wells Dunnam of Grapeland; two
daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Lamb of Grapeland and Mrs. Elwanda Thedford of
Tyler; four brothers, Theodore Dunnam of Latexo, Woodrow Dunnam of Green
Valley, Illinois, Ross and Robert Dunnam, both of Palestine; two sisters,
Mrs. Iva Wells of Elkhart and Mrs. Willie Mudock of Louisiana; four
grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

George Hudson Duren

Mr. George Hudson Duren, 98, of Rt. 1, Crockett, passed away at his home
Saturday night, Jan 27, after an extended illness.

Mr. Duren was born in Houston County on Sept. 17, 1874, and had lived here
for his entire lifetime. He was a member of the New Energy Methodist
Church, and also a member of Lathrop Lodge No. 21, AF & AM, of Crockett.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the New Energy Methodist
Church, with Rev. J. D. Helpenstell and Rev. W. H. Wieting officiating.
interment was in the New Energy Cemetery, with Masonic graveside rites
under the auspices of Lathrop Lodge No. 21 of Crockett.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Zelma Beathard of Vidor and Mrs.
Velma Minter of Crockett; a son, George R. Duren of Crockett; 10
grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Thomas Guy Duren

Mr. Thomas Guy Duren, 61, of Houston, died Sunday afternoon. Born and
reared in Houston County, Mr. Duren had lived in Houston the last five
years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the New Energy Church, with
the Rev. A. S. Lee officiating. Burial was in the New Energy Cemetery.

Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Guy Duren of Houston; a brother, Will Ike
Duren of Crockett; seven sisters, Mrs. Frank Johnson, Mrs. J. C. Bell and
Mrs. Lovie McAnally, all of Crockett, Mrs. A. S. Temple of Humble, Mrs.
Jimmy Stewart of Washington, D. C., Mrs. J. E. Ashmore of Houston, and Mrs.

W. O. Durham

Mr. W. O. Durham, 85, died in Lufkin Sunday night, following an extended
illness. Mr. Durham, a retired employee of the Texas Forest Service, was a
deacon of the First Baptist Church of Lufkin and a member of Calthrop Lodge
No. 419, AF & AM, of Kennard.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church of
Lufkin, with Dr. Arthur DeLoach officiating. Burial was in Garden of
Memories Memorial Park.

Survivors include the wife; five sons, Lynn, Glynn, Raymond, Pat and Joe
Durham, all of Lufkin; a daughter; Mrs. J. C. (Rip) Hinson of Lufkin; a
brother, Albert Durham of Crockett; 12 grandchildren; and nine great
grandchildren.

Albert D. Durham

Mr. Albert D. Durham, 89, of Rt. 1, Crockett, died Sunday afternoon in a
local hospital.

Mr. Durham, a retired farmer, was born in Cherokee County on March 21,
1881, but had lived in Crockett and Houston County most of his lifetime. He
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crockett.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Callaway Memorial
Chapel, with Rev. E. P. Ramsey, pastor of the First Baptist Church,
officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery, near Ratcliff.

Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Betty Durham of Crockett; a son, Frank
Maxie Durham of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. Albertine Leediker of Amarillo; a
stepson, Brent Bennett of Houston; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ruth Seagler of
Houston; five grandchildren; three great grandchiildren; three
step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

Lester Ezra Durham

Mr. Lester Ezra Durham, 62, of Rt. 1, Crockett, died at his home Monday.

Mr. Durham was born July 7, 1905, in Cherokee County. He was a retired
operator of heavy construction equipment.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday from the Callaway memorial
Chapel, with Rev. E. P. Ramsey Jr. officiating.. Burial was in Evergreen
Memorial Park in Crockett.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Margie LaRue Hanks of Houston; his
father, Albert Durham of Crockett; a brother, Maxie Durham of Houston; a
sister, Mrs. Lois Leediker of Amarillo; three granddaughters, Kandy Leora,
Kelly Beth and Kimberly Kay Hanks, all of Houston.

Louis H. (Preacher) Durst

Louis H. (Preacher) Durst, 59, a vice president and director of Brown &
Root, Inc., and a native of Crockett, died Tuesday in a Houston hospital.

A descendant of a pioneer Texas family that settled in East Texas in the
1800's. Durst was born in Crockett on March 10, 1904.

Durst was a member of the operating committee of Brown & Root, and had been
general manager of all construction since 1955.

He had been a national dirctor of the Associated General Contractors of
America, Inc. since 1959, and was a past president of the association's
Texas municipal and utilities branch.

Durst was a frequent banquet speaker and an active leader in Texas A. and
M. College alumnus activities. He received his bachelor of science and
master of science degrees in civil engineering from A. and M.

In 1928 he wen t to work for Brown & Root in general road and paving work.
In 1930, he left the company and joined the Uvalde Asphalt Co. He was a
Texas Highway Department district engineer during 1933.

In 1934, he returned to Brown & Root as a resign engineer and had been with
the company since then. He organized the purchasing department and served
as general purchasing agent from 1939 to 1941.

Before he was appointed general manager of construction, his field was
primarily heavy engineering construction. He directed projects in the
Houston area until he was put in charge of all construction in 1955.

Durst was a member of the Methodist church, the Arabia Temple Shrine, the
Anson Jones Masonic Lodge, the Texas Society of Professional Engineering
Society and the Houston County Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vickory Durst; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth
Durst of Shreveport, La.; a son, Louis Jr. of Houston; two brothers, Julian
Durst of Crockett and Horatio Durst III of Gretna, La.; and two sisters,
Mrs. Richard N. Potter and Miss Mary Elizabeth Durst, both of Shreveport.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Saint Paul's Methodist
Church with Dr. Alfred H. Freeman and Dr. John Land officiating.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 3"30 p.m. Thursday afternoon,
June 27, in the Evergreen Memorial Park in Crockett, with the Rev. E. Jewel
Strong officiating.

Mrs. Lila Valrye Durst

Mrs. Lila Valyre Durst died in Fort Worth early Thursday morning.

Mrs. Durst, formerly a resident of the Crockett area, had lived in Fort Worth the last 20 

years. She was a member of the Methodist church.

Funeral services were held at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery at 3:45
p.m. Friday, with the Rev. Jim Killen officiating.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Horace Lansford of Forth Worth and
Mrs. Tom Markham of Houston; three brothers, John, Bill and Sam Lemons, all
of Centerville; and two sisters, Mrs. Harold Sullivan of Bryan and Mrs.
Howard Wallace of Centerville; three grandchildren.

Mrs. Elizabeth Wakefield Durst

Mrs. Elizabeth Wakefield Durst, 92, of Shreveport, La., died March 3 in
Shreveport.

Mrs. Durst, a Crockett resident many years, was born in Midway Jan. 31,
1877. She was a member of the Christian Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in the Callaway
Memorial Chapel, with Rev. E. P. Ramsey of the First Baptist Church,
officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were John Durst, Louis Durst Jr., Dupont Durst, Pat Wakefield,
Jerald Wakefield and Leon Wakefield.

Survivors include two daughters, Miss Polly Durst and Mrs. R. N. Potter,
both of Shreveport; two sons, Julian Durst of Crockett and Rashe Durst of
Gretna, La.; a brother, Leon A. (Buddy) Wakefield of Madisonville; eight
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Albert C. Dykes, Jr.

Mr. Albert C. Dykes Jr., 46 of Crockett, died at his residence Thursday
morning.

Mr. Dykes was in the building and lumber business here, where he had lived
the last 10 years. A native of Arkansas, he was a member of the First
Methodist Church, and a veteran of World War II as a pilot with the
U.S.Navy. Mr. Dykes was a graduate of Georgia Tech.. He was s Scottish Rite
Mason and Shriner, and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He had served as
chairman of the official board of the First Methodist Church, vice
president of the Crockett school board, and president of the Rotary Club.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday in the First Methodist Church,
with Rev. L. B. Broach and Rev. Weldon B. Morton officiating. Services
followed at 5 p.m. at the graveside in the Farmerville, La., Cemetery, with
interment following.

Active pallbearers were Ross Kinslow, Allen Rogers, Dr. Richard D. Haines,
Dr. James C. Moore, Dr. A. B. Brown, Jr., and W. D. Julian. Honorary
pallbearers were James Rector, Dr. J. B. Land, Clive Dickey, A. C.
Satterwhite, R. E. Thibodeaux and Wm. Smith.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Jean Dykes of Crockett; a son, A. C.
Dykes III of Crockett; two daughters, Mrs. Pamela Levert of New Orleans and
Miss Donna Jean Dykes of Crockett; his mother, Mrs. A. C. Dykes Sr., of
Crockett; a brother, Roland Dykes of Dallas.

Mrs. Virginia Dykes

Mrs. Virginia Dykes, 71, of 705 East Bowie Ave., Crockett, passed away
Sunday, May 13, in the Houston County Hospital.

Mrs. Dykes was a lifelong resident of Houston County and was a member of
the First Christian Church. She had been employed by the Latexo schools for
the past 31 years, and was a member of the T.S.T.A. and the retired
teachers association. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of the
Waller Funeral Home, with Rev. E. P. Ramsey officiating and Rev. Bruce
Banks assisting. interment was in the Evergreen Memorial Park.

Survivors include the husband, L. L. Dykes; a daughter, Mrs. C. B. Sexton; a
grandchild, Mrs. Nona Beth Murchison; all of Crockett.
