Robert Clarence Heath

Robert Clarence Heath, age 91 passed away peacefully on Monday, October 17, 2011 with his loving family by his side. He was born on July 13, 1920.

Robert served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from the United States Navy in 1968.


He is preceded in death by one son, William Warren Heath.

Robert leaves behind his family to cherish his memories, his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Betty G. Heath; one son, Gary E. (Janet) Heath of Corpus Christi; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home.  Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Houston Co., Texas.
 

 

Ann M. Putman
Rev. Ann McCelvey Putman of Hiltons, Virginia slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on the evening of September 24, 2011.

Born in Crockett, Texas, she was the daughter of Chester and Ellen Brightman McCelvey. She met and married Jim Putman in Phoenix, Arizona in March of 1996. She had resided in Virginia for several years, ministering with her pastor husband in Russell and Scott Counties. She was a noted author, a speaker, and a teacher, and loved to tell her stories about Jesus. She touched and changed the lives of everyone she got near.

She is survived by her husband Jim Putman; sister, Bonnie Cadwell; step-daughters, Laura Cree (and Michael Cree), Julie Wellman, and several grand children, nephews, and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 29 at Scott County Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7 p.m. with Rev. Bill Porter officiating.

Scott County Funeral Home is serving the Putman family.

 

James Yarbrough (1938 - 2011)


Retired Major, James C. Yarbrough , passed away March 16, 2011.

 

Survived by son, Jack; grandchildren, Jade and Jared; sister, Terry, and James's companion Joyce.

 

James served two tours of duty in Vietnam and trained soldiers as an Army Battalion Executive Officer. He later was a JROTC instructor in the HISD. We are all proud of the sacrifices he made to his country, family and friends.

 

Visitation will be held in the Chapel of Advantage Funeral Home Wednesday, 8am till 10:45 am. Graveside service with full military honors to follow at 12:00 noon at the Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Funeral services for Mr. Glyn B. Cook, age 89, of Crockett, will be held Monday, April 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel. Mr. Glyn B. Cook, age 89, of Crockett, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Crockett. He was born September 19, 1921 to William Hull Cook and Minnie Mae Brewton Cook of Porter Springs and lived in Houston County where he graduated from Crockett High School in 1938. On February 1, 1941 he married his sweetheart Georgie Lavenia McDonald and recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. He was a World War II U. S. Army veteran having served in the China-Burma-India Theatre. After his return from the war he and his wife and three young sons lived in Nacogdoches before locating to Houston where he worked for Armco Steel until his retirement in 1977. He enjoyed his retirement years living in the the Ash Community, working in his garden, tending his livestock, and volunteering in the Ash and Austonio communities where he had many friends. He attended the Ash Church of Christ with his wife.

He was known in the community as “B” Cook, but his grandchildren affectionately called him Pawpaw. They loved and respected him and always knew there was room for one more on “Pawpaw’s knee.” He loved and was proud of them all.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Georgie Lavenia McDonald Cook of the Ash Community; sons, Glyn McDonald Cook and wife, Norma of The Woodlands, William Michael Cook and wife, Emma of Bryan, Jimmie Lynn Cook and wife, Susan of New Waverly; grandchildren, Traci Cook Lee and husband, Richard of Fort Worth, Jeffrey Cook of Alexandria, Virginia, William Michael Cook, Jr. and wife, Missy of Houston, Mark Willis Cook and wife, Tracey of Pennsylvania, Christopher Scott Cook and wife, Kristi of Pflugerville, Marcy Rebecca Pullen and husband, Lucas of Oxford, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Barrett, Stephanie and Kale, Brandy, Maggie and Bryan, Alyson, Emily, John Thomas, Ethan, Tucker, Cheyenne and Levi; great-great-grandchildren, Fletcher, Brooklyn, Anderson, Brayden and Bradley; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mrs. Ann Boulware, age 82, of Kennard, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011 in the East Texas Medical Center-Tyler. She was born October 30, 1928 in New Mexico and had lived in Kennard. Mrs. Boulware was a housewife.

Mrs. Hazel Adelle Luce Blackmon, age 95, of Irving, formerly of Palestine, passed away Monday, May 2, 2011 in the Hearthstone Assisted Living Facility in Irving. Mrs. Blackmon was born January 18, 1916 in Houston County, Texas and was living in Irving, previously living in Palestine. She was a retired railroad wife (that is a lot like being a military wife) and had retired from Montgomery Wards in Houston. She was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers Auxiliary and Believers in Christ Church in Palestine. Survivors include daughters, Yvonne Blackmon and Neva Rae Blackmon; son, Sherril Blackmon and wife, Faye; Preceded in death by husband, Samuel Floyed Blackmon, infant daughter and parents, John R. and Candis Ellen (Knox) Luce .

Mrs. Gresham was born January 6, 1926 in Houston County, Texas and had lived in Crockett for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern in Crockett Chapter # 509. Mrs. Gresham was a housewife and had retired as an executive secretary in Houston. She attended Community Full Gospel Church.

Mrs. Katie Thompson , age 92, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in the Memorial Hospital in Lufkin. Mrs. Thompson was born August 9, 1918 in Kountze, Texas and the majority of her life was spent in Crockett among her beloved East Texas pines. She married Robert Donald Thompson III in 1940. During World War II when R. D. was shipped out, she worked on the U. S. Naval base in Corpus Christi and thoroughly enjoyed it there and also worked on a naval base in Florida for a time and loved it there. After the war, she returned to Crockett, Texas. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and actively pursued her livestock career working the sale barn in both Crockett and Palestine. After working the sale barn, she then pursued raising cows of her own along with her husband for many years on their property which was affectionately known as the “FUNNY FARM.” She enjoyed gardening, fishing, feeding the animals and bottled fed many a calf. Mrs. Thompson was a fine lady that was plain spoken in a few words but always willing to push the envelope if you tested her. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Crockett.

She was retired having worked as a secretary for Northland Cable and was a member of the San Pedro Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wells was born August 6, 1935 in Lovelady, Texas and had lived all of her lifetime in Lovelady. She was a member of the Lovelady Church of Christ and had worked as a tax assessor for Lovelady Independent School District. Mrs. Wells enjoyed quilting, sewing reading and loved her grandchildren.

THOMAS EDWARD (EDD) KENLEY

Thomas Edward (Edd) Kenley of Crockett (formerly of Lufkin) was born January 18, 1924 in Diboll, Texas to Sidney Walters Kenley and David Crockett Kenley. He died on May 7, 2011 at his home on the Kenley’s Mustang Prairie Ranch near Austonio.

 

Edd moved from Diboll to Lufkin at age 12 into the bluebonnet house on East Shepherd Avenue. He graduated from Lufkin High School in 1941 and went to Texas A&M University for a year and a half, and at the beginning of World War II, Edd returned to Lufkin and in 1943 received his private pilot license, commercial pilot license and flight instructor license. He loved flying and continued to be active as a pilot through the remainder of his life only having to give it up as his health subsided in his later years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. After his service to the Navy, he continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a BBA in 1949. He returned to Lufkin and joined his father in the ranching business, a career that spanned for more than 70 years in areas of Angelina County, Trinity County, LaSalle County and most recently at Kenley’s Mustang Prairie Ranch in Houston County, where he was in partnership with his son, Clay Kenley.

 

Edd was a member of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, serving as a Director from 1958 until 1994, at which time he was elevated to Honorary Director and retained that title until his death. He was instrumental in assisting the state animal health to eradicate the screwworm in Texas during the 1960’s. He was a member of the Texas Forestry Association for more than 35 years. He was a member of the Texas Livestock Marketing Association, and was a member of The Round Table in Lufkin. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Lufkin.

 

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kenley, of Crockett, sons, Clay Kenley and wife, Sharon Kenley of Crockett, and Steve Day and wife, Terri Day, of Lufkin, daughter, Debra Henderson and husband, Chip Henderson, of San Antonio, sister, Marie Shirey and husband, Edward Shirey, of Cumberland, Maryland, daughter-in-law, Jill Carswell and husband, Mike Carswell, of Lufkin, granddaughters, Sidney Kenley of Crockett, Kimberly Day and Stephanie Milligan and husband, Kevin Milligan of San Antonio, Karen Henderson and husband, Brian Jensen of Boulder, Colorado, Becky Haire and husband, Devon Haire of Dillon, Colorado, and Leslie Ball and husband, Kris Ball of Lufkin, grandsons, Casey Kenley and Travis Kenley of Crockett, Philip Day and wife Jackie Day of Garner, North Carolina, Chris Day and wife, Audrey Day of Lufkin, Jonathan Day of Dallas, Keith Henderson of San Antonio, Matthew Henderson of Boulder, Colorado, and Patrick Day and wife, Leslie Day of Lufkin, and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Alan Day, and a brother, David Kenley.

Mrs. Enos was born September 10, 1911 to Eugene Burton and Prince Anna Dorsey Smith, one of nine children and had lived in Houston County since 1946. She was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church in Crockett.

Mrs. Eura Grace Bowdoin Brown, age 91, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011 in the Winfield Nursing Center in Crockett. Mrs. Brown was born July 13, 1919 in Porter Springs, Texas and had lived most of her lifetime in Crockett. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Brown was a charter member of the Monticello Baptist Church. She was a housewife and enjoyed working in her yard and garden.

Rebecca Peterson Knowls, age 67, of Crockett, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2011 in the Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. She was born September 18, 1943 in Crockett, Texas and had lived in Crockett since 1996. Mrs. Knowls was retired having worked as a loan office for a mortgage company and banks. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Crockett.

 

Survivors include daughter, Audrey Graham and husband, David of Alvin; grandson, Brian Graham of Alvin; step-son, Gary Knowls and wife, Tess of Lake Conroe; brother, Pete Peterson and wife, Jan of Lufkin; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; foster children, Dustin and Donavan Tomlinson of Houston. Jackie Bickham, age 81 , of Crockett, passed away Friday, May 20, 2011 in the M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. She was born March 21, 1930 in Collins, Mississippi and had been living in Crockett since 1970. Mrs. Bickham received her Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi Southern University and Master’s degree from Sam Houston State University. She was a teacher having taught in Vidor, Mauriceville, Tomball, Centerville, Navasota, Grapeland, Crockett and retired from Lovelady I. S. D. Mrs. Bickham really enjoyed teaching special needs children and was a member of the Shady Grove First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Beavers was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Crockett.

Mrs. Goolsby died Sunday at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett. She was born March 29, 1933 in Nacogdoches County to Hardy and Clara Logan.

 

Mrs. Goolsby was a homemaker. Mrs. Goolsby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ray Marshall Goolsby, a daughter Wanda Fay Butts, sons David Lee Butts and Billy Ray Goolsby.

ESTES PARK, Colo. - Reba Banta Sewell was born in Medina, Texas, on July 9, 1915, to Emma Mayfield Banta and Ernest John Banta.

 

She passed away peacefully at Prospect Park Living Center in Estes Park, Colo., on Sunday, May 15, 2011.

Reba was a member of the First United Church of Crockett, Texas, where she lived much of her life. She was also a member of the Maj. Jarrell Beazley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Crockett, Houston Co., TX.

 

Reba loved playing bridge, doing needlework and being with family. She created many beautiful pieces of crochet, counted cross-stitch and needlepoint, which will be passed down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
