Sharon French Hadley, age 54, of Golden Acres, passed away Monday, September 13, 2010 at her residence. She was born March 14, 1956 in Houston, Texas and had lived in Crockett for the past 7 years. Mrs. Hadley was a retired Medical Professional Administrative Assistant for the past 17 years having worked for Memorial Hermann Hospital and was a member of the Alvin-Heights Baptist Church.

Jerry Frizzell, age 66, of Crockett, passed away, Sunday, September 12, 2010 at his residence in Crockett. He was born May 07, 1944 in Crockett, Texas and had lived all of his lifetime in the area. He was retired having worked for Allee Work Clothes as a cutter.

Gerald Wayne Burgess, age 68, of Grapeland, formerly of Deer Park, passed away Monday, September 6, 2010 at his residence. He was born September 10, 1941 in Greenville, Texas and was a 1960 graduate of Deer Park High School. Mr. Burgess had lived the last 15 years in Grapeland, previously living in Deer Park. He was retired from Quantum Chemical Corporation having worked as an operator and enjoyed wood working.

Survivors include daughter, Wendy Burgess Lewis of Deer Park; grandchildren, Whitney, Brittany and Reece Lewis of Deer Park; great-grandson, Brent Lewis of Deer Park; step-son, Paul Hart and wife, Sherry of Missouri City; step-daughter, Tracy Hart of Florida; mother, Margie Burgess of Deer Park; brother, Douglas Burgess and wife, Carol Ann of Deer Park; sister, Janice Holleman and husband, Jimmy of Deer Park; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mrs. Marie Woodson Bender, age 94, of Sugarland, passed away Monday, September 6, 2010 in Atria in Sugarland. She was born March 11, 1916 in Fort Worth, Texas and had been living in Sugarland for the past 2 years. She was a graduate of Rice University and was named Mrs. May Fete receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Mrs. Bender was a retired Fourth Grade Teacher having worked for West University Elementary with 20 years of service and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crockett. Survivors include sons, J. D. Woodson III of Danville, California, John Woodson of Bethel Island, California, Jim Woodson and wife, Kim of Sugarland; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceded in death by husband, Dudley Woodson; parents, Lucian and Mary (Marrast) Wallace; sister, Annie Gaye Sealy; mother-in-law, Margaret Foster Woodson; father-in-law, Dudley Woodson, Sr.; second husband, Commander William Bender and daughter-in-law, Martie Woodson.

She was born April 10, 1942 in Crockett, Texas where she was born and raised. Mrs. Whitley was a graduate of Crockett High School and lived in Crockett most of her lifetime. She was a retired business owner having owned and operated several businesses in Crockett including; the Royal, Judy’s Drive In, Cattlemen’s Royal and Kings Inn.

Survivors include daughters, Brenda Guyton of Crockett, Glenda Roberts of Crockett, Cheryl Whitley of Athens; son, James V. Whitley of San Antonio; grandchildren, Michael, Angela, Daniel, Chad, Sarah, Brad, Adam and Jacob; great-grandchildren Logan and Kyle; step-children, Verlene Schmidt of New Caney, Betty Lacy and husband, Melvin of Houston, Ted Colvin and wife, Mary of Livingston; several step-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

He was a retired truck driver.

He was born July 09, 1925 in Houston County, Texas and had lived all of his lifetime in Kennard. Mr. Dowdy was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served during World War II. He was a past member of the Woodmen of the World. Mr. Dowdy was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he served as deacon and was self employed working in the Construction Business.

He was born June 16, 1918 in Laurel, Mississippi and has lived in this area since 1997. Mr. Jordan was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II. He was a 32 degree Mason and member of the Masonic Lodge in Orange. Mr. Jordan was a retired Construction Supervisor for the Pipe Line Industry and was a member of the Grace Street Church of Christ in Crockett.

Services for Barkley Luce age 74, of Frankston and formerly of Palestine will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with Rev. Don Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in McCarter Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Palestine. Mr. Luce died Thursday night at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. He was born March 6, 1936 in Grapeland to Barney Moore and Verna Jeanette English Luce. Mr. Luce was a self employed paint contractor for many years in Palestine and surrounding counties. Mr. Luce was an avid Grapeland Sandies fan and loved fishing.

Mr. Luce was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Carroll Luce and Buford Luce.

He is survived by his wife Jean Luce of Frankston, sons Paul Luce and wife Annette of Lufkin, and Brandon Luce and girlfriend Shelly Odom of Frankston, two sisters Martha Kaudelka and husband Rudy of Palestine, and Janie Jordan and husband Jackie of Lufkin, two brothers Billy Luce and wife Lenora and Winston Luce and wife Eddie all of Palestine, seven grandchildren, Cody Luce, Morgan Luce, Maurice Luce, Breanna Luce, Stormi Luce, Kristin Loya and Carly Luce Mack, one great grandson Caiden Luce and numerous nieces and nephews.

(February 18, 1936 - August 25, 2010)

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Byrd 74 of Grapeland, will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at Evergreen Chapel, with the Rev. Kenny Bush officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mr. Byrd passed away Wednesday at his residence. He was born February 18, 1936 in Crites, West Virginia to Albert and Mary Toth Byrd. He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam war. Mr. Byrd was employed with NASA in communications and then Western Electric as a Supervisor. He owned and operator Byrd Country Store for 30 plus years.

Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters; Stella Shaw and Bertha Coffee, three brothers; Jim, Steve and Albert Byrd.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years Charlene “Tooter” Byrd of Grapeland and a brother John Byrd of Coleman, Al.

Mrs. Hazel Smith, age 79 of Crockett passed away Aug. 22, 2010 at Houston County Nursing Home. She was born September 10, 1930 in Hiawatha, Kansas. Mrs. Smith had retired from the Crockett State Bank after many years of service. She then went to work for the law Firm of Charles Carter and worked there for several years before retiring from there. She was involved with the SPJST Lodge. Some of her favorite pasttimes was fishing , square dancing and having silly string fights with her children and grandchildren at Christmas time.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son’s, Bob Smith and wife, Ginia, Chris Smith and wife, Tena; daughter, Sandra Boyd and husband, William all of Crockett; grandchildren, Aryn Driskell, Amber Martin and husband, Justin, Somer Franklin and husband, Tyler, Kristy Hartley and husband, Brian, Elizabeth Luce, Christopher Smith, Tiffany Smith; six great-grandchildren and brother, Keith Bohnenkemper and wife, Esther Mae of Huntingburg, Indiana.

Mr. George Henry Zuckero, age 87, of Crockett, passed away August 20, 2010 in the Houston County Nursing Home. He was born June 3, 1923 in Houston, Texas to Samuel B. Zuckero and Nancy Elizabeth McQueen Zuckero. George was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crockett and the A. S. Lee Sunday School Class. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II in Sicily, Normandy, Northern Frances and Central Europe having received the Purple Heart and EAME Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Stars. George was a Dairy Farmer most of his life having an all Jersey Dairy in LaGrange later moving to Crockett in 1965. He enjoyed donating and selling Jersey heifer calves to 4-H and F F A students for their projects and they being successful. George was later in the beef business.

George is survived by his wife, Ruth Anna Zuckero, three brothers, Sam B. Zuckero and wife, Dorothy, Nick Zuckero and wife, Eunice, Victor Zuckero; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Velma Page, age 67, of Crockett, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010 in the Houston County Nursing Home. She was born August 21, 1943 in Lovelady, Texas and had lived most of her lifetime in Crockett. Miss Page was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness.

Mr. John Roland “Johnny” Bear, age 65, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, August 08, 2010, in the East Texas Medical-Center. He was born July 21, 1945 in Crockett, Texas and was a lifetime resident of Crockett. Mr. Bear was a member of the Lothrop Masonic Lodge #21 A. F. & A. M. having served as Worshipful Master in the past. He was a 33° Master Mason. He belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 509 and was currently serving as Worthy Patron. He was a 2008 Initiate of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was owner and operator of Bear Machine Shop for many years and was a U. S. Census worker. Mr. Bear was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Crockett. Mrs. Arminta Mary Carter Arnold, age 90, of Crockett, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010 in the Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was born April 19, 1920 at home in Galveston, Texas while her father was attending medical school.

She grew up in Austin. While attending the University of Texas she met and married Douglas Harold Arnold. They returned to make their home in Crockett after World War II.

As an active member of First Baptist Church, Arminta served tirelessly as church librarian, WMU director, Girls Auxiliary leader and many other roles. She was especially honored to serve as trustee for East Texas Baptist University, one of Doug’s alma mater’s.

Always involved in the Community, she was a member of the Magnolia Garden Club, past president of the Crockett PTA, and a docent for the Downes-Aldrich House. She also served as drive chairman for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. In her later years, she loved to travel and join her friends for bridge games.

She was happiest when doing for others and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Barbara Jean Marsh, age 48, of Crockett, passed away Monday, August 23, 2010 in Methodist Hospital in Houston of cancer. Barbara was born September 14, 1961 in Marengo, Indiana to Robert and Charlotte Lynch, their only child. She attended Marengo Public School and as a teenager, she and her mother moved to Crockett. She met and married James H. Marsh and they were married 32 years and had two daughters, Carrie and Meagan. Barbara was a homemaker and was a loving, caring and kind person. She was loved by all who really knew her. The love of her life were her grandchildren, husband and mother.

She is survived by her husband, James H. Marsh of Crockett; two daughters, Carrie Davis and Meagan Joslen and husband, Calvin of Crockett; mother and stepfather, W. E. Clara Nell Card, 78, of Lufkin, was born May 2, 1932 in Latexo, Texas, the daughter of the late Flora (Green) and Warnie Hamb. She passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 in a local hospice facility.

Mrs. Card was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She loved cooking and having her family together. She was employed at Okay Food Store for 34 years. Mrs. Card was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Madge Brewton Hadid, born in Houston County March 1, 1917 to Sam Jones Brewton and Vanona Smith, was born to Eternal Life June 12, 2010. She was one of four siblings: Madeline Adkins, her twin, Virginia McCain and Reva Brewton.

After graduating from Crockett High School she worked for Miss Montie’s (Monzingo) dress shop in downtown Crockett until she met and married George Hadid of Palestine, Texas. They were married sixty years at the time of George’s death in 1999. The driving force in her life was to care for her family, her husband and daughter. She provided a peaceful home, a sanctuary from the everyday cares of daily living. She was a devoted, loving, and selfless wife and mother. “Well done good and faithful servant……enter thou into the joy of the lord.” (Matthew 25:21)

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Joe Underwood, nieces and cousins, Milton McCain, Rita Moore, and Leah Jo Adams, their spouses and children.

A private interment for Mrs. Madge Brewton Hadid was held on June 15, 2010 in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Crockett, Texas.

Bobby Charles Baker, age 62, of Lovelady, passed away Friday, July 02, 2010 in the Huntsville Memorial Hospital. He was born July 25, 1947 in Crockett, Texas and had lived in Lovelady most of his lifetime.

Mr. Baker was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the Dutch Oven Society. Mr. Baker was retired having worked for Lovelady State Bank as second Vice President and Head Cashier. His number one favorite thing was being Papa Bob. He loved to fish and tinker and he loved reading.

Winward George “Win” Bradshaw, age 86, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 in the East Texas Medical Center-Tyler. He was born September 05, 1923 in Grapeland, Texas and had lived in Crockett most of his lifetime. He was a retired veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II as Sergeant First Class. Mr. Bradshaw was also a retired veteran from the United States Army National Guard having served as First Sergeant for 25 years. He had worked as a car salesman for King Motor Company and had served as Officer for the Houston County Veterans Service for 25 years. Mr. Bradshaw was a supporter of Crockett Merchants Little League, 15 year member and past president of the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge, lifetime member of the National Guard Association of Texas, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 134. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Crockett.

DR. BILLY WALTON

Dr. William Henry “Billy” Walton, 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 1, 2010. He passed away while resting peacefully at his home. His family is grateful for the life he led and the time that they had with him. They also draw comfort from the faith that he lived and trust in the security of his salvation through Christ.

Dr. Walton retired in 1987, after working for 19 years as a college administrator. His last position was Dean of Academics at Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas. Previous jobs included serving as President of Texas Southmost College and pastoring several Methodist churches in East Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Messer Walton, daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Phil Reicheneker, son and daughter-in-law Harold and Brenda Walton, son and daughter-in-law Wyche and Cyndi Walton, and daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Ralph Richardson. He is also survived by three sisters – Ruth Logan, JoAnn Larkin, and Dorothy Larkin - eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Services were held at Evergreen Cemetery in Percilla, Texas at 11:00 AM on July 3, 2010 with Dr. Jack Schoultz and Rev. Kenny Bush officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Bailey & Foster Palestine.

Mary Mangham

Mary Mangham was born on November 2, 1921, in Crockett, Texas to John and Mary (Walker) Bell. She passed away on Monday, July 5, 2010 in Huntsville, Texas, she was 88 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James H. “Buddy” Mangham, Sr.; daughter Brenda Jenkins and two sisters, Mildred Little and Reba Pyle.

Those left to cherish her memory are sons, James H. Mangham, Jr. and wife Linda and Mike Mangham and wife Nelda; seven grandchildren: Jackie Gardiner, Brandon Jenkins, John Jenkins, James Robert Mangham, Bobby Mangham, Justin Mangham and Clayton Mangham; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as the loving family and residents of Ella Smither Nursing Home in Huntsville, Texas. Mary dedicated her life to taking care of family and friends.

Jerry Edward McClain, age 66, of Ratcliff, passed away Tuesday, July 06, 2010 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. He was born April 09, 1944 in Hagerville, Texas and been living in Ratcliff since 1978. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. McClain had worked as an exterminator for McClain’s Pest Control . He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.

She was born February 25, 1925 in Gainsville, Texas and had lived in Crockett for several years, previously living in Baytown. She was a housewife and a member of the Harvest Church in Crockett.

Jimmy Franklin Harrison, age 62, of Kennard, passed away Monday, July 26, 2010. Mr. Harrison was born in Crockett, Texas on December 13, 1947 to Jack and Geneva English Harrison and lived most of his lifetime in Kennard. He was baptized at the early age of nine and in later years was a member of Centerhill Methodist Church.

In August of 1966, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He is survived by his mother, Geneva Harrison of Lufkin; daughters, Tiffany Harrison Stubblefield of Lovelady and Shanna Harrison James and husband Michael of Lovelady; mother of his children, Lana VanDeaver of Huntsville; and four grandchildren, all of Lovelady; Ty and Jacy Stubblefield and Madelyn and Cody James. Mr. Harrison is also survived by his sister, Brenda and husband Terry Stubblefield of Kennard; niece, Mandy and husband Kyle Palmer of Tyler; and nephew, Trevor Stubblefield of Kennard. 

Mr. Harrison was preceded in death by his father, Jack Allen Harrison.

David Evans, age 58, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in the Whitehall Nursing Center in Crockett. He was born April 01, 1952 in Crockett, Texas and had lived all of his lifetime in the area.

Mr. Evans was a veteran of the Texas National Guard. He was former owner of Evans Discount Auto World in Crockett and Evans Towing and Recovery in Crockett . David had developed a strong work ethic and worked beside his father for 43 years. His hobbies were few because of his love for work. David’s priorities were his girls and his yard, when not working he was on his lawn mower.

Smith Satterwhite, age 87, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. He was born October 27, 1922 in Crockett, Texas and lived all of his lifetime in Crockett. Mr. Satterwhite was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp. having served during World War II. He was past Vice President at Crockett State Bank from 1940-1942 and a director until it sold. Mr. Satterwhite was retired owner and operator of Satterwhite Wholesale Grocers. He was a member of the First Baptist Church since 1934.

Mr. Henry Lee “Jake” Driskill, age 98, of Latexo, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 in the Winfield Nursing Center in Crockett. He was born August 26, 1911 in Latexo, Texas and had lived all of his lifetime in Latexo. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II.

Mr. Driskill was a rancher and carpenter and had also worked as a building supply salesman for Stowe Lumber Company. He was a member of the Latexo United Methodist Church. He also served on the Latexo School Board for many years, as well as the Houston County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. Mr. Driskill, was chairman for the Latexo Cemetery Board of Directors for over 50 years. He was active for many years in the Latexo Community Council and other community organizations.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Linda Lee Bear and Danny Bear of Latexo; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Rebekah Lee Riemenschneider and Chad of Grapeland; niece, Sue Ross and husband, Joe of Latexo; nephew, Bill Driskill and wife, Kathy of La Porte. Numerous other relatives.

Polly Hammett Dawson

Memorial services for Polly Hammett Dawson, age 84, of Crockett, will be held Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Crockett with Rev. Jim Tom Ainsworth officiating.

Mrs. Polly Hammett Dawson was born on October 26, 1925 in Luling, Texas to Watterson N. and Dula Taylor Hammett. She went to schools in Crockett and Louisiana, graduating from Lockport High school in 1942. She attended Southern Louisiana College before returning to Crockett where she met and married local farmer and rancher, James Edwin Dawson, Junior. The couple raised their 3 children Jim, Paul, and Polly Ann in Houston County until J.E.’s untimely death in 1967.

Polly was the owner of Polly Ann’s Shop on the square in Crockett. She worked as a bookkeeper for many area businesses and physicians. In 1981, Mrs. Dawson moved to Bryan, Texas where she was employed by the Brazos County Transit Authority.

Mrs. Dawson was an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Garden Club, the Pilot Club, and the Crockett Sewing club. In Bryan, Polly served as the president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club. She enjoyed cooking and needle point, and she loved to entertain her many friends. She was famous for her annual Christmas party which she hosted for over 40 years.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Edwin Dawson, Junior.

She is survived by her sons, James Edwin Dawson, III and wife Ellen and David Paul Dawson and wife Carol, all of Crockett and daughter Polly Ann Morrison and husband Chuck of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Christine Allen and husband Carson of Gainesville, Georgia, David Dawson and wife Shannon of Dallas, Brant Dawson of Houston, Lauren Dawson of Crockett, James, Max, and Charlie Morrison of Colorado Springs. Also left to cherish her memory are great grandchildren Jackson, Ellie Kate, Wright, Jackie, Jake, and Emme. The family is especially grateful to Polly’s caregiver, Mrs. Nelda Callier.

James Ray Low, age 76, of Latexo, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in the Community Care Center in Crockett. He was born April 22, 1934 in Houston County, Texas and had lived in Latexo most of his lifetime. Mr. Low was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served four years stationed in Reno, Nevada. He was a retired newspaper carrier and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include daughter, Kathy Stamper of Jacksonville; sons, Dr. James Ray Low, Jr. and wife, Patty of Jacksonville, Brad Low of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann McKnight and husband, George of Porter Springs; brothers, Bill Low and wife, Toby of Latexo, Garland “Pete” Low and wife, Elizabeth of North Zulch; special friends, Claude Phipps of Crockett. On July 23, 2010 a cowboy was taken from his place on earth to be with his Lord and Savior.   Cody was born on April 25, 1990 and passed away on July 23, 2010 at the age of 20.

Cody graduated from Huntsville High School in 2008. He was a Senior Flagman for the class of 2008 and was a Life Time Member of the Walker County Fair Association where he showed goats. Cody loved life and most of all his family and friends. He was a true outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish and his new found love for BULL RIDING.

Cody is preceded in death by his Grandpa’s Herbert Popp and Preston Warren.
