A.B. TURNER
November 25, 1939 - December 4, 2010

  A.B. Turner, 71, of Fairfield, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010 in Tyler, Texas. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 at Capps Memorial Chapel with Rev. Terry Skinner officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Stewards Mill Cemetery.

Mr. Turner was born November 25, 1939 in Houston County, Texas, near Latexo, to parents Albert and Birdie Mae Weisinger Turner. Mr. Turner was a graduate of Latexo High School and Tyler Commercial College. He was involved in the commercial freight business in East Texas before moving to Fairfield in 1980 to manage the Red Arrow Freight Terminal and oversee family ranching interests. He was also a former Freestone County Justice of the Peace.

A.B. will be remembered for his musical talent, his tale telling ability, his hospitality and his marvelous sense of humor.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Honorary pallbearers will be Morris Schulman, Mark Schulman, Craig Schulman, Willie Wofford, Jr., Marvin Bland, James Whatley, David Rousch and William Jacoby.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Justin K. Turner of Fairfield; three grandchildren, Brandi Holcomb of Tyler; Ashley Turner of Fairfield; Brett Turner of Fairfield; one great-grandson, Ayden Jones of Fairfield; three sisters, Christine Schulman of Latexo; Billie Jones of Crockett; Valta Engstrand of Elkhart; four nephews, four nieces and his ex-wife, Jo Olive Watson Turner of Fairfield.

 


Viola Mae Badgett
(July 11, 1928 - December 14, 2010)

Funeral services for Viola Mae Badgett 82 of Grapeland, will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at Felders Chapel Assembly of God Grapeland, with Rev. Randy Shipman and Rev. Don White officiating.

Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster. Mrs.

Badgett passed away Tuesday at her residence. She was born July 11, 1928 in Gore, Ok., to Lester William and Georgia Lee Worley Butler. She was a housewife and a member of Felders Chapel Assembly of God.

Mrs. Badgett was preceded in death by her parents, husband George Badgett, brothers Samuel Floyd Butler, John Edward Butler, Raymon Lester Butler, sister Edna Jewell Gregg and grandson Micah Drew White.

She is survived by daughters, Marcia Kay Stuart, Teresa Ann White and husband Don all of Mt. Pleasant, son George Henry Badgett III and wife Cheri of Grapeland, sister Joyce Evelyn Burge of Vidor, nine grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, George H. Badgett IV, Gregory Alan Badgett, Brent E. Burrow, Clint E. Burrow, Damon E. Burrow and J.B. White. Honorary pallbearers will be Micah Drew White, Michael C. Badgett, Wade D. Marcontell and Wesley D. Walker.

Bill Cadwell, 80, husband of Bonnie McCelvey Cadwell formerly of Crockett, Houston Co., TX, passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2010 in Conroe, Texas.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 16, 2010 from 5:30-7:00PM at Klein Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 1:00PM, Friday, December 17, 2010 at The Woodlands Christian Church, 1202 N. Millbend Dr, The Woodlands, Texas.

RAYMOND "R.C." TURNER
(February 13, 1925 - December 8, 2010)

Funeral services for Raymond “R.C.” Turner 85, of Grapeland will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, at Felders Assembly of God Grapeland with Rev. Randy Shipman officiating. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery.

Mr. Turner passed away Wednesday December 8th, in Louisiana. He was born February 13, 1925 in Latexo, Texas to Clarence and Mary Mims Turner. He graduated from Latexo ISD and returned to Grapeland twenty-five years ago. He sold crawfish in Grapeland and Crockett, and was known as “The Crawfish Man” at Kim’s on Crockett Rd., in Palestine.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Biondolillo Turner, five sisters Ruby Goolsby, Clardee French, U.L. Bradley, Dolores Ellis and Meta Turner Moore and one brother Olin “Toad” Turner.

He is survived by daughter Linda Bellow and husband Lawrence, sons Raymond Gary Turner and wife Pam, Steven Roland Turner and Joseph Dale Turner, a brother Jake Turner, all of Eunice, La., eight grandchildren Brian Vidrine of Italy, Jolie Zygulski and husband Paul of San Antonio, Adrienne Turner of Lafayette, Alexis Turner of Boulder City, Co., McKenzie, Kelsie, Kade and Cesily Turner, all of Eunice, La., nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
 


BETTY ANN ELLIOTT
(December 1, 1924 - December 8, 2010)

Memorial services for Betty Ann Elliott 86 of Crockett, will be held 3:00 PM Saturday December 18th, at Bailey & Foster Chapel Grapeland with Reggie Gregory officiating.

Mrs. Elliott passed away Wednesday at ETMC Crockett. She was born December 1, 1924 in Killen, Al., to James M. and Myrtle L. Trouseale Harrison. She worked as a switchboard operator for many years in New Orleans.

Mrs. Elliott was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ruth Jenning and a great great granddaughter Jasmine. She is survived by a daughter Virginia McKean and a son Jim Elliott and his fiancé Carolyn Gentry, a sister Katheleen Tassara, grandchildren Nita, Debbie, Gay, Amanda, Patrick and Robert, thirteen great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.


"Randy" Ruby
(November 22, 1951 - December 1, 2010)

Services for Randy Ruby age 59, of Grapeland, will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Bailey & Foster Chapel, Palestine with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Judson Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby died Wednesday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. She was born November 22, 1951 in Dallas to Darrell and Faye Keebler Henson. Mrs. Ruby was retired as a medical aide for UTMB at the Gurney Unit. She was a member of the Evangelistic Temple.

Mrs. Ruby was preceded in death by her father Darrell Henson. She is survived by her husband of 14 years Jerry Ruby of Grapeland, mother Faye Kroger of Leander, daughter Nickie Walker and husband Patrick of Kodiak, AK, a son Darrell Ross and wife Stacie of Cayuga, a brother Darrell “Chip” Henson of Leander and nine grandchildren.


VERNA HARRISON DUREN

Funeral services for Mrs. Verna Harrison Duren will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. Richard Gillet and Rev. Winston Coones officiating. Interment will be held in the New Energy Cemetery.

Mrs. Verna Harrison Duren, age 104, of Crockett, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010 in the Whitehall Nursing Center in Crockett. Mrs. Duren was born March 17, 1906 in Harrison Town, Texas and had lived in Port Arthur until 1964, moving to Crockett. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a lifetime member and past president of Port Acres P.T.A. and a member of the Houston County Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Duren was a homemaker and was also a member of the New Energy Methodist Church.

Survivors include children, Doris Alderman of Shreveport, Louisiana, Colleen Moore of Groveton, Verna Hogan Baumbach and husband, Joe of Pasadena, Virginia Sherer and husband, Arnold of Crockett, William Wayne Duren and wife, Joann of Beaumont, James Hudson Duren and wife, Sandy of Crockett, George T. Duren, Jr. and wife, Debby of Lufkin; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; twenty-five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Preceded in death by husband, George T. Duren, Sr.; great-grandson, Brian Moore, eight siblings and son-in-law, Gaylon Alderman. She was the last survivor of the James and Margaret Harrison Family.

Funeral services for Mr. Donece Craven will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel. Family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mr. Don Craven, age 63, passed away on Thursday, December 2 at his home at Waterwood, Texas. He was born September 4, 1947 in Crockett, Texas, where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the University of Texas.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Deal Craven. He is survived by his loving mother, Bitsy Craven, sister and brother-in-law, Thelda and Ed Chambliss, and nephew, Chris Chambliss, who he adored.

Most of his work was in the hotel business as general manager of major hotels and then resort properties. He was always dedicated to his work. His most recent employment was Community Manager of the Property Owners Association at Cape Royale.

Burial will be at the Pennington Cemetery.

Mrs. Billie Jean Robinson, age 77, of Dickinson, formerly of Weldon, passed away Thursday, December 2, 2010 in the Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. She was born December 27, 1932 in Weldon, Texas and had been living in Dickinson for the past 12 years. Mrs. Robinson was retired having worked as a hairdresser and was a member of the Pine Drive Community Church.

 

Survivors include daughter, Jackie Thompson and husband, Willie of Dickinson; granddaughter, Faith Kilmer and husband, Richard of Chireno; grandson, David Thompson and wife, Lynnette of Virginia; great-grandchildren, Trent, Lance, Nicole, Natalie, Lauren and Jack; brother, John Greer and wife, Gloria of Cleveland; sister-in-law, Yvonne Anderson of Port Neches; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Preceded in death by husband, Jack Robinson in 1990; daughter, Paula Robinson in 1968; five brothers and sisters.

Frank Edward Surginer, age 77, of Grapeland, will be held Friday, December 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Harvest Church in Crockett with Rev. Dennis Ivey officiating. Graveside services will be following at 3:00 p.m. in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Houston. Family will receive friends Thursday evening 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Frank Surginer passed away Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at his residence. He was born September 9, 1933 in Maydell, Texas and had been living in Grapeland for the past 10 years. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps having served as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Surginer was a lifetime member of the V. F. W. Post # 518 and was retired having owned and operated Surginer Trucking Company. He was a member of the Harvest Church in Crockett.

Survivors include wife, Pat Surginer of Grapeland; son, Craig Surginer and wife, Patty of Houston; daughter, Kim Rose Cornell of Grapeland; granddaughter, Kristina Myhres and husband, Jason of Palestine; grandsons, Kyle Stolarski of Houston and Keith Cornell of Grapeland; brothers, Wilburn Surginer of LaPorte, Howard Surginer of Luling; sisters, Shirley Cox of Corpus Christi, Gay Cox of Corpus Christi, and Kathy Surginer, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews , other relatives and eight loving dogs. Preceded in death by parents, Vinia and Garland Surginer; sister, Mary Lou Maddox; brothers, James Surginer and Charlie Surginer.

L. Ray Platt, age 73, of Blanco, passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 at his residence. He was born May 2, 1937 in Grapeland, Texas and had been living in Blanco for the last 5 years.

Mr. Platt was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served during peace time. He had worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Canyon Lake Methodist Church. Mr. Platt was also a member of the Antique Truck Historical Society Yellow Rose Chapter, Ramblin Rods- Michigan and Roundtable Gang at Startz Café.

Survivors include wife, Joan Platt of Blanco; daughter, Rhonda Kay Delavan and husband, Richard (Bobo) III of Blanco; son, Danny Ray Platt and wife, Tina of Canyon Lake; grandchildren, Richard Delavan IV, Joanna Delavan, Kaitlyn Platt and Zane Platt; sister, Barbara Rice of Splendora; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Preceded in death by parents, Harry and Willie Mae Platt and two brothers.

PAYTON McCONNELL

Payton McConnell, age 82, of Grapeland, passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 in the Winfield Nursing Center in Crockett. He was born October 16, 1928 in Pennington, Texas and had lived in Houston County all of his lifetime.

Mr. McConnell was a barber and a member of the First Baptist Church in Pennington.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean Conflict along with his twin brother Paul who lost his life in that War. Also preceded in death by father and mother, Charles Henry and Minerva Jane McConnell; sisters and brothers; Mary Alma Freeman, Tom McConnell, Kay McConnell, Pat McConnell, Ted McConnell, Blanche Avery, Opal McConnell and Susie Williams.

He is survived by many loving nieces and nephews including caregivers, Quinton and Mary Shaver and also his wonderful caretaker, Anna Duchette.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Payton McConnell will be Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Flat Prairie Cemetery with Rev. Carroll Norsworthy officiating. Interment will follow. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the Flat Prairie Cemetery.

LEO “BOW” WILLIAMS, JR.

Leo “Bow” Williams, Jr., age 67, of Latexo, passed away Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at his residence. He was born December 20, 1942, in Covington, Kentucky, and had lived in Latexo for the past 15 years.

Mr. Williams was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a retired machinist and member of Truly God’s Country Cowboy Church.

Survivors include wife of 43 years, Laura Gail Williams of Latexo, Texas; three daughters, Angela Ray Tucker of Laurel, Mississippi, Laura Foreman and husband, David of the Woodlands, Rachel Hebert and husband, Joseph of Latexo, Texas; fourteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; five sisters and one brother, Barbara, Mildred “Peaches”, Gail, Diana, John and Naomi. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Preceded in death by father, Leo Glenn Williams, Sr. and mother, Mildred Lorraine Williams.

Funeral services for Mr. Leo “Bow” Williams will be held Saturday, November 20, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Truly God’s Country Cowboy Church with Rev. Gene Kellum officiating. Military honors will follow at the end of the funeral service. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Truly God’s Country Cowboy Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Texas Children’s Hospital.

C. R. Chambers
(May 27, 1935 - November 25, 2010)

Funeral services for C.R. Chambers 75 of Grapeland, will be held at 10:00 AM Monday at First Baptist Church Grapeland, with Rev. David Bradley and Dr. Jack Shoultz officiating. Burial will follow with Masonic Grave Rites in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. Chambers passed away Thursday in Crockett. He was born May 27, 1935 in Port Arthur, Texas to William Coy and Jane Marie Jones Chambers. He retired from the Navy after twenty years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church Grapeland and Masonic Lodge #473.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of nineteen years Marie Frisby Chambers of Grapeland, daughter Patti Lynn Chambers-Harris and husband Rick of Athens, four sons; Craig Chambers of Pasadena, Glen Chambers of Athens, Ron Chambers and wife Sherry of South Carolina and Don Chambers and wife Tina of Los Gatos, Ca., brother Jerry Chambers and wife Barbara of Plantersville, sisters-in-law; Laura “Boots” Averite and husband Ronnie of Palestine, Gloria Redmon of Katy, fourteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was loved by many family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Ben Childress, Willard Kyle, David Walton, Bill Watley, Tracy Salman and David Starek. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Masonic Lodge #473. Condolence calls will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday at the Bailey & Foster Chapel Grapeland. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund at the Masonic Lodge #473.


Annie "Florene" Graham
(April 26, 1932 - November 27, 2010)

Services for Annie “Florene” Graham age 78, of Latexo will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday at Grace Bible Church with Pastor Mike Tindall officiating. Burial will follow in Graham Family Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mrs. Graham died Saturday at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett. She was born April 26, 1932 in Houston County to Lawrence and Corine Turner Goolsby. Mrs. Goolsby attended the Grace Bible Church. She graduated from Latexo High School and lived in Houston for many years before returning to Latexo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Denny Graham in 2000, two sisters Maedell Bradley and Zelma Platt, and two brothers Wilson Goolsby, and Ellis Goolsby.

She is survived by her sons Gary Graham and wife Bessie, Greg Graham and wife Donna, and Wyatt Graham all of Latexo, four grandchildren, Daniel and Tara McCurley, Adam and Jessica Graham, Jonathan Graham, Kevin and Hillarie Gustavus and five great grandchildren, Jaycee Graham, Zachary Gustavus, Abigail Gustavus, Preslee Gustavus, and Conner Graham.

Pallbearers will be Adam Graham, Jonathan Graham, Mike Goolsby, David Goolsby, Daniel McCurley, and Daniel Howard.

(October 7, 1921 - November 8, 2010)

Funeral services for U L Bradley 89 of Crockett, will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday at Austonio Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Shirley officiating. Burial will follow in Milligan Cemetery.

Mrs. Bradley passed away Monday at ETMC Crockett. She was born October 7, 1921 in Leon County to Clarence and Mary Mims Turner.

She was formerly employed with Texas Youth Commission as a cook and was a member of Austonio Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her parents and husband Archie Bradley and son-in-law Pete Hammons. She is survived by daughters Patricia Sustaita and husband Raymond of Palestine, Deloris Hammons of Grapeland and Vicky LaRue and husband Dean of Austonio, sons Clarence Bradley and wife Gay of Elkhart, Robert Bradley of Splendora, Timothy Bradley and wife Cindy of Shephard and Scott Bradley and wife Sharon of Grapeland, sister Clara French of Nacogdoches, brothers R.C. Turner of Grapeland and Jake Turner of Eunice La, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons.

OSCAR GILBERT
Oscar Gilbert, age 83, of Belott, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Gilbert was born April 6, 1927 in Houston County, Texas and had lived in Crockett all of his lifetime.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Gilbert was retired painter and carpenter. He was a member of the New Energy Church.

Survivors include wife, Evelyn Gilbert of Belott; children, June Young and Bernie Woolley of Dyer, Tennessee, Judy Elliott of Temple, Janet Perkins and husband, Dennis of Temple, David Young and wife, Janet of Deer Park, Michael Young and wife, Molly of Pearland; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; brother, Boyce Gilbert and wife, Billie of Belott. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

DR. ROBERT EDWIN NOBLE

Dr. Robert Edwin Noble, age 75, of Crockett, Texas, formerly of Louisiana, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 in the Community Care Center in Crockett, Texas. He was born April 30, 1935 in Jefferson County, Mississippi and had moved to Crockett two years ago.

Dr. Noble was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the 31st Infantry Division in 1958. He received a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Wildlife Management from L S U and a PhD from Michigan State. Dr. Noble was a professor at LSU for 28 years in Forestry and Wildlife Management until his retirement. He was awarded membership in Xi Sigma Pi and Sigma Xi and received the National Amoco Foundation Award for “Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching”. In 2009, he was inducted into Forestry Wildlife and Fisheries Alumni Association Hall of Fame. Dr. Noble traveled extensively, spent seven summers in Alaska studying everything from the effects of harvesting virgin timber on bird populations, to Dall sheep in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge, and reindeer near the Chukchi Sea.

Survivors include wife, Allene Noble of Baker, Louisiana; daughter, Dr. Stephanie Shroyer and husband, Johnny of Porter Springs, Texas; grandson, Robert Paul Shroyer of Porter Springs, Texas; sisters, Delia Ann Guedon and husband, Emile of Church Hill, Mississippi, Mary Ed Guedon and husband, Arch of Church Hill, Mississippi; brother, Erne Maddux Noble and wife, Lucy of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. GENEVIEVE TARWATER SMITH

Mrs. Genevieve Tarwater Smith, age 83, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010 She was born on June 28, 1927 in Helmic, Trinity County, Texas to George Dewey and Effie Tarwater. Baptized as a Christian during her early years at Austonio Baptist Church. She graduated from Crockett High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps while attending Jeff Davis Nursing School at University of Houston in Houston, Texas. She became a Registered Nurse at 19 years old.

She met Russell M. Smith while working in Houston. They married and moved to Seattle, WA where they resided and had their 2 daughters. They moved back to Crockett in 1968 permanently. Genevieve worked at Crockett Medical Surgical Hospital and Grapeland Hospital. She was Director of Nurses at Leisure Lodge, Texas Youth Commission, where she was extremely dedicated to working with the youth. She finished her career as a Registered Nurse at the Texas Department of Corrections, East Ham Unit. She retired to care for her husband. She is predeceased by her parents, along with her husband of 42 years, Russell M. Smith.

Survivors include her daughters Cindy Smith Morgan and husband Richard of Spring, Texas and Cam Smith Gorsky and husband Bob of Plano, TX along with grandchildren Michael Russell Gorsky, Sarah Elizabeth Gorsky, Airman Richard Ryan Morgan, United States Navy, Taylor Leigh Morgan and Hayley Camilla Morgan. Her Sisters, Natha Lee Lovell of Crockett, Dewey Alene Williams of Beaumont. Nieces Janice and Byron Warren, Kay and John Bayne, Joel Clyde Lovell, Glenda and Bryan Worthy, Justin and Tish Williams, along with various great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Genevieve enjoyed traveling and seeing sights all over the United States and Canada. She loved fishing, bird watching and nature. She was an avid sewer and loved reading. She loved cooking and enjoyed sharing meals with family and friends. In her later years her main interest was following the lives and careers of her 5 grandchildren, whom she loved unconditionally. She will be remembered by many as having a kind heart, helping others with whom she worked throughout the years, with gifts of food, money and by offering a listening ear and through encouraging others to continue their education toward their career paths.

Mr. Billy Millican, age 75, of Huntsville, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in Huntsville. He was born May 4, 1935 in Crockett, Texas and was a resident of Huntsville for the past 30 years.

Mr. Millican was a member of the Masonic Lodge #147 in Plantersville and was retired having worked as a supervisor of tool assembly for Baker Oil Tool Company with 38 years of service. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Dorothy Marie Kunz Bowdoin, age 78, of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in the Houston County Nursing Home in Crockett. She was born March 15, 1932 in Schulenburg, Texas and had been living in Crockett for the past 2 ½ years. Mrs. Bowdoin was a member of the Woodlands Baptist Church in Splendora and she attended the Georgia Camp Baptist Church. She was a housewife.

Mrs. Rena Dyches, age 93, of Crockett, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2010, in the Community Care Center in Crockett. Mrs. Dyches was born March 26, 1917, in Houston County, Texas. She married K. P. Dyches on February 29, 1936. To this union they loved and raised eight children and two grandchildren. She had worked as a nurse’s aid, medication aid, cafeteria worker and child care provider. After retiring, she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and quilting. She went to be with the Lord with her family by her side.

BETTY (Shipp) SANDERS
1922-2010


Betty Jane Shipp Sanders, passed away in her home on Thursday, October 28, 2010. She was born of Mack M. and Nan Hail Shipp on August 31, 1922, in Dallas, Texas.

 

Mrs. Sanders lived, was educated, and married in Crockett, Texas. Her ancestors, Jonas J. Hail, was an early settler of Houston County. Her home and property are located on a position of a Mexican land grant in 1834 to said ancestors in the Jonas J. Hail Survey A-40. Mr. Hail later served in the fight for the independence of Texas at the Battle of San Jacinto. Mrs. Sanders was a resident of Houston, Texas, for 20 years, where she worked as an accountant for several large firms and also assisted in the management of two high-rise apartment residences in River Oaks. She retired to Crockett in 1979 to care for her father and to manage the new Pine Tree Manor, a retirement community located in Crockett, for 25 years.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dupree Sanders of Sweetwater, Texas, in 1961; by her son, Charles Patrick Sanders in 2007; and by her sister, Evelyn Moore Scuddy of Beaumont, Texas. She is survived by her daughter, Bettye Mac Sanders Bryant and her husband, Jerry of LaFayette, Alabama; as well as a niece, Nancy Scuddy Waggoner of Palestine, Texas.
Mrs. Sanders was a life-long Episcopalian and was most recently a member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Crockett, Texas.

Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Jane Shipp Sanders will be held Monday, November 1, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with Rev. John G. Chase officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park. An All Saints’ Episcopal Day Celebration and Memorial services will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church located at 1301 East Houston Avenue, Crockett, Texas.

Mr. Robert Larry Patton, age 62, of Houston, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2010 in the Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. He was born June 15, 1948 in Crockett, Texas and was a resident of Houston since 1963.

Mr. Patton was self employed having worked in the construction business. He enjoyed wood working and welding.

ANITA BYRDE CRADDOCK BIGGER
1926-2010

Anita Byrde Craddock Bigger was resurrected to her new life with Jesus Christ on Sunday, October 24, 2010. A native of Crockett, Texas, Anita Byrde was born to Delha Mildred and Samuel Weldon “Chappie” Craddock on August 24, 1926. An only child, she grew up nurtured in love from her parents as well as her beloved Grandmother, Byrde Eastham Wootters. All four lived together in the family home, “the homeplace”, built by Byrde and Andrew Henry Wootters in 1900. Her paternal grandparents were Augusta Daniel and Henry Franklin Craddock, Jr.

Anita Byrde graduated “Most Beautiful” from Crockett High School. In 1945, she earned a diploma from The Hockaday School Junior College, Dallas. Ela Hockaday, the school founder, attended a program at the Crockett Women’s Building to hear Anita Byrde sing an aria. Named the soprano songbird from Crockett, Anita Byrde earned the nickname “Tweet”.

She transferred to The University of Texas in Austin to continue her music and voice studies. She joined Kappa Kappa Gamma and was tapped Blue Bonnet Belle nominee. She married Kappa Alpha President, Morton Bigger, Jr. of Dallas in December of 1947. After a brief residence in New Orleans, Anita Byrde and Morton made their home in Dallas where they became parents of three daughters, Anne, Margaret, and Carolyn. Anita Byrde became associated with Artha Garza Realtors in the ‘70’s. In 1989, after the passing of her Mother, Anita Byrde returned to her childhood home in Crockett and rejoined The First Presbyterian Church where she was an active supporter of the Presbyterian Women of the Church.

She followed her Mother in serving on the boards of Glenwood Cemetery and the Houston-Leon County Coal Company. Anita Byrde enjoyed a lifelong membership in Spring Creek Country Club in Crockett.

Among her many admirable qualities, she was known by her family and friends as a lady with a sparkling personality who loved to cook and entertain. Her style and artistic sensibilities brought great pleasure to all around her. She exhibited excellent business skills, as well as foresight and wisdom in her daily living.

Anita Byrde will be dearly missed by all who loved her. She is survived by Mildred Anne Bigger Nixon and husband, Larry; Margaret Morton Bigger Tarrance; Carolyn Byrde Bigger Peck and husband, Hoddy; grandchildren Walt Nixon and wife, Lindsey, Morton Nixon and wife, Chandler, Caroline Nixon; Briton Tarrance; Sam Peck and Jock Peck.

Larry James Howard
1940 – 2010

Larry James Howard, 70, was born August 27, 1940 at Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. He was the son of Linnie Jobe Howard, Jr. and Dorothy Ruth "Dawn" Williams. He was the step-son of John Robert Dodson.

He died from complications of Parkinson’s disease on Monday, October 11, 2010 in Albany, Oregon. A private interment was held at the Capt. Roland S. Dodson family cemetery located east of Latexo, TX under a large holly tree on what was the Rusty Rancho ranch owned by Capt. Roland & Margie Meadors Dodson until their deaths.

After Larry Howard graduated from Corpus Christi High School, he volunteered for duty in the Viet Nam war effort. He served his entire term as a surgical scrub nurse at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC. He spent many years working in hospitals caring for the ill. He designed and built three houses; he wrote, produced, directed and starred in three made-for-TV movies that were underwritten by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation; in Hollywood he wrote, produced and directed a feature length film titled "Four Day Shoot".  He was a golf course marshal at BajaMar near Ensenada. In 2002, he moved to Seal Beach, California.

Survivors include his wife, Arva Howard of Lake Oswego, OR; sons Scott Howard (Cindy) of Lebanon, OR, Daniel Howard of Crockett, TX, and four grandchildren.

Mr. Raymond Banks, age 79, of Grapeland, passed away Sunday, October 17, 2010 in the Palestine Regional Hospital, Palestine, Texas. He was born March 21, 1931 in Percilla, Texas and had lived all of his lifetime in Grapeland. He was retired from the Texas Highway Department and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Weches.

Survivors include sisters, Doris Wells and husband, Lee of Crockett, Jean Bohannon of Houston, Maxine Morehead and husband, LaMorris of Huntington, Linda Bobbitt and husband, Roy of Weches; brothers, John Banks of Houston, Ronnie Banks of Willis. Numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

RAYFORD GALLANT

Rayford Gallant, age 92 of Kennard, passed away Monday, September 27, 2010 in the Community Care Center in Crockett.

Mr. Rayford Gallant was born on his family’s farm near Kennard, Texas on April 26, 1918. His parents Marion “Mainy” and Ludie Gallant purchased the farm in 1913, and the entire family worked on the farm. He was the youngest child of the family. His siblings included Ola, Robert, Hazel, Woodrow, and Aileen. Ola and Robert died as children. He grew up during the great depression. The Gallant family raised cotton, peas, corn, cattle, and hogs. He and his brother, Woodrow grew up hunting and fishing in the forests of eastern Houston County.

Mr. Gallant married Wilma Baker on December 23, 1937. He worked in Jim Cook’s general store in Kennard. He rode a horse to work and back home every day, and worked seventy-five hours per week at a salary of five dollars. Later, he worked in the meat market as a butcher at Brookshire Brothers in Crockett. After about seven years, he and Wilma moved to Odessa, Texas, and later to Buda, Texas, where their sons Danny and Billy were born. While the family lived in Buda, He worked in meat processing plants as a butcher in Austin. He and Wilma also operated a dairy farm.

In l957, they sold their property in Buda and moved back to his family home place near Kennard. They also moved the dairy operation to east Texas and continued dairy farming until the mid-nineteen-sixties. Mr. Gallant also operated a country store in the Berea community. He sold the store in the mid-nineteen-sixties and became a deputy sheriff for a period of time. He then was elected county commissioner of Precinct Four in Houston County and retired after twelve years of service. Mr. Gallant was a wonderful, caring husband and father. He worked hard all of his life, and was completely committed to his family. He loved his family with all of his heart and always demonstrated and expressed his love to his wife and sons. He was also a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather.

He dearly loved his grandchildren Sonya, Logan, and Ashley. He also lived to know and love his great-grandchildren, Skylar and Hailey. He particularly loved for Skylar to address him as Pa, and extend her fist for a “fist-bump” with him.

Mr. Gallant was a man of integrity and character. He was a “people person”, and had friends in all walks of life. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger. He was extremely proud of his friends and the positive relationships they had. He also enjoyed music and influenced his family with his love of music. He loved to sing, and enjoyed singing in church beyond his ninety-second birthday. His family and friends will always remember his enthusiastic gospel bass-singing.

Survivors include his sons Danny Gallant and wife Ethel and Billy Gallant, all of Kennard; grandchildren Sonya Stevenson and husband Shane, Logan Gallant and fiance’ Elizabeth Dowdy and Ashley Gallant, all of Kennard; great-granddaughters Haley Nicole Morgan and Skylar Grace Stevenson; numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his wife Wilma Gallant; parents M. F. and Ludie Gallant; sisters and brothers Hazel Currie, Woodrow Gallant, Ola Gallant, Robert Gallant and Aileen Currie.

Funeral Services for Mr. Rayford Gallant were held Wednesday, September 29, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Mt. Olive Church with the Rev. Larry Bruce and the Rev. Ottis Byers officiating. Interment followed in the Corinth Cemetery.

Melanie Meyer Munselle, age 55 of Lufkin, passed away Friday, September 24, 2010 in Lovelady.

Mrs. Munselle was born February 5, 1955 in Houston. She was a correctional officer with TDCJ. Melanie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lufkin.

Survivors include her husband John Munselle, of Lovelady; children Amanda Leigh Allen and Jermy, of Conroe, Gilford Thomas Stovall III and Mandy Michele, of Lufkin, Kevin Andrew Stovall, of Cold Springs, Ryan Meyer Stovall, of Lufkin; one grandson Gilford Thomas Stovall IV., of Lufkin; mother Maryland Meyer, of Houston; brother Michael Meyer, of Houston; sisters Kathy Meyer and Heather Humphries, of Houston; father-in-law Gilford Thomas Stovall, Sr., of Lufkin; numerous other relatives.

CARRIE ALLEE

Mrs. Carrie Allee, age 99 of Crockett, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in the East Texas Medical Center-Crockett. Mrs. Allee was born February 11, 1911 in Houston County, Texas and had lived in the area all of her lifetime.

Mrs. Allee was a member of the Austonio Baptist Church and was a housewife. Her joy was gardening, mowing everything in sight on her John Deere tractor and growing her flowers.

Survivors include her daughters Ann Brantley and husband LaDon, of Crossett, Ark., Nina McQueen and husband William, of Pasadena; son Johnson Allee, of Austonio; sisters Maisy Indjidjian and Daisy Fritze, both of Crockett; grandchildren Belinda Carder, Mike Brantley, both of Crossett, Ark., JoAnn Hough, of Austonio, Bill McQueen, of Concord, Calif., Jim Allee, of Kirbyville, Sharon Allee, of Austonio and Lydia McKendree, of Corsicana; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her husband Joe L. Allee in 1971; and daughter-in-law Dody Allee in 2007.

HAYNE WILLS

Mr. Hayne Wills, age 89 formerly of Dickinson, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2010 in New Braunfels. Mr. Wills was born at Lone Pine, Houston Co., TX on March 29, 1921. He was the last living child of Willard and Minnie Ellen Kelley Wills.

Mr. Wills graduated from Lovelady High School and attended Sam Houston University until he joined the Navy at the onset of World War II. He worked at Union Carbide in Texas City for thirty years. He enjoyed his days of ranching in Lovelady.

Survivors include his wife Bobbie; son Robert Wills and wife Becky; daughter Joyce Teague; grandchildren Matt Wills, Mary Garcia, Logan Teague and Megan Teague; one great-grandchild Abigail Garcia.

Graveside Services for Mr. Hayne Wills were held Saturday, October 9, 2010 at11:00 a.m. at Center Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Leroy Brown officiating.

Mrs. Jewel Anderson, age 91 of Nacogdoches, passed away Friday, October 8, 2010 in Lexington Place in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Anderson was born March 26, 1919 in Houston County and had lived in Nacogdoches for the past eleven years. She was a member of Appleby Baptist Church in Nacogdoches.

Survivors include her two daughters Martha Sue Varley, of Grapeland and Weida Shurtleff and husband Robert, of Sugar Land; one son Dennis Anderson and wife Janice, of Nacogdoches; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Sonley D. Anderson; parents Wade and Martha Vada Crenshaw; sisters Katheleen Steingburg, Irene Slowiski and Ona Wells Gentry; and son-in-law Richard W. Varley.

(November 9, 1925 - October 17, 2010)

Funeral services for Lloyd Vernon Chiles 84 of Grapeland, will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at First United Methodist Church Grapeland, with Rev. Dick Dobbins officiating. Burial will follow in Grapeland City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mr. Chiles passed away Sunday in Crockett. He was born November 9, 1925 in Houston County to William and Agnus Kyle Chiles. He was retired from AMOCO Oil where he worked in maintenance. He was a member of First United Methodist Church Grapeland.

Mr. Chiles was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Mary Chiles of Grapeland, two sons William Chiles and wife Lisa of Grapeland and John Chiles and wife Rayne of Hineston, La., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Joe Graves, Steve Lewis, Kurt Bridges, Elbert Shanks, Stanley Skidmore and Larry Huff.

(March 27, 1945 - September 20, 2010)

Graveside services for Kenneth Ray Lemons 65 of Grapeland, will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at Parker Cemetery with Bro. Duane Mills and Bro. Josh Mills officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.

Mr. Lemons passed away Monday at Winfield Healthcare.

He was born March 29, 1945 in Dallas, to Theo and Judith Darr Lemons.

He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church for many years and lived in this area since 1986. He was a veteran and served two tours in Viet Nam. Mr. Lemons was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Ruth Wilson and Elsie Moore, brother-in-law Carl Moore, nephew Kevin Mason, two brothers Clifford Darr and Bill Lemons.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Shirley Lemons of Grapeland, sister Sue Lemons of Caddo Mills, brother Walter Lemons of Quinlan, mother-in-law Joyce Merchant of Grapeland, brother-in-law Bill Merchant of Grapeland, Brenda Obannon of Grapeland, sister-in-law Jewel Lemons of Rockwall, and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends of this area, and his faithful companion a Jack Russell Terrier named Mollie.

Funeral services for Sylvia Leamons Lively 92 of Grapeland, will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Church of Christ Grapeland with Alan Sowders and Gary Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Livelyville Cemetery.

Sylvia Leamons Lively departed this life Tuesday September 21, 2010 at ETMC-Crockett.

She was born to William Duke and Mattie Ann Morehead Leamons January 11, 1918 at Grapeland, Texas. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She married M.T. (Red) Lively July 23, 1938. They were the parents of two daughters Virginia and June. M.T. preceded Sylvia in death May 18, 2000.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers; Wallace Leamons, Arthur Leamons, J.D. Leamons, A.C. Leamons, E.T. Leamons and Howard Leamons, four sisters; Willie Mae Stockbridge, Johnie Lee Marable, Gertrude Adams and Marjorie Graham Gale. She is survived by daughters; Virginia Ann Higgon and husband George of Brazoria and June Garst of Conroe, grandsons; James Franklin Thompson, Christopher Wayne Hinman and Douglas Anthony Landry, great grandchildren; Jamie, Chris, Lauren and Tiffany Thompson, Amanda and Cassie Hinman and Elizabeth Landry, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Mrs. Barfield died Sunday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

Mrs. Tunstall passed away Monday in Elkhart. She was born November 19, 1937 in Houston County to Grover C. and Mary Allen Luce. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Tunstall was preceded in death by her father, husband Bill Tunstall, two sisters; Essie Hughes and Wawease Catron and brother Tommy Luce.

She is survived by mother Mary Allen Luce of Grapeland, daughter Dianna Tunstall Smith and husband Doug of Elkhart, son Glen Tunstall and wife Lisa of Teague, brother G.C. Betty Ramsey, age 86, of Longview, passed away Thursday, October 07, 2010 in the Longview Specialty Hospital. She was born July 10, 1924 in Walnut Grove, Missouri, and was a resident of Longview for the past 4 years. She was a housewife.

Katherine Smith Stovall, age 90, of Crockett, previously of Carthage, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in the Whitehall Nursing Center in Crockett, Texas . She was born November 21, 1919 in West Monroe, Louisiana and resided in Carthage for many years also living in Clarksville. Mrs. Stovall was a member of the Jr. League of Carthage, where she had served as Chairman and was instrumental in the opening of the first Library in Carthage, the Garden Club of Carthage, First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a homemaker and a librarian.

JOE BILLINGSLEY

Joe Billingsley, age 68, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010, at his residence. He was born November 30, 1941, in Lufkin, Texas, and had lived in Crockett most of his life. Mr. Billingsley owned and operated Billingsley Auto Supply in Huntsville prior to moving to Crockett in 1977.

 

He lived a quiet and peaceful life of his choice and was a giving, honest, and thoughtful man. Joe was a hard-working and loving father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend to all. In the words of his youngest son, John, “My dad was an extraordinary person who motivated me to strive for perfection through honesty, integrity, and always placing faith in God first followed by a strong sense of family values and ties. I owe everything to the wonderful childhood memories that Daddy made possible and will pass his legacy on to my own children. We will all miss you so very much, Daddy, and until we meet again, may God shed His everlasting light on you.” Joe will be remembered and always loved by his family and friends.

Mart M. Melton, Jr. age, 84, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, September 28, 2010 in the Houston County Nursing Home in Crockett. He was born June 22, 1926 in Brownwood, Texas and had lived in Crockett for the past 3 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during World War II. Mr. Melton was a retired Banker and a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Huntsville.

DIANNA ELIZABETH "Buff" (DEAN) WILLIAMS BOWMAN
1942-2010

 

Dianna Elizabeth "Buff" (Dean) Williams Bowman, age 68, of Crockett, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2010. She was born September 07, 1942 in Crockett, Texas and was a resident of Crockett all of her lifetime.

Buff graduated from Crockett High School in 1961 after spending four active years with her friends and classmates. During her high school years she served on the student council and was involved in many school clubs. She was an organizing member of the Crockett Drill Team, the Crockettes, and served as an officer and Choreographer for this organization. She was President of the Crockett Pep Squad and was elected Senior Class Favorite by her class. During these years she sang with the choral group,
the Clarettes, directed by Mrs. Paul Stokes.

She grew up as a member of the First Baptist Church and served them at an early age as both organist and pianist, working alongside her mother, Albertine, who served many years as choir director. She participated in all youth programs of this church.

Buff attended Mary Hardin Baylor and SMU where she studied music education. She taught piano and voice lessons in Crockett and as a married adult, once again served as organist and pianist for the First Baptist Church. She organized and conducted the Newcomer Singing Group for young girls and directed the Melody Makers, a singing group of adult seniors.

Buff served as a trustee of the Crockett Independent School District. She served CISD as a volunteer for the band and other school activities while her children attended school. Buff was a 41 year member of the Major Jarrell Beasley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, having joined as a Junior member. She served as Chaplain of this organization. She was Sweet Heart and member of the Crockett Lions Club. Buff was a member of the Crockett Chamber of Commerce and worked as an Ambassador for the chamber.

For the past fifteen years, Buff made her church home at the First Baptist Church in College Station where she was a staff member. She served as organist for her beloved church and participated as a member of Cornerstone, a church singing group that performed in the area and presented musicals for their congregation.

Buff leaves a legacy of service and leadership to her community, a marvelous musical talent and unsurpassable love for her family, her friends and those she served.

Earline Cline
Earline Cline was born September 24, 1935 and went to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 1:47 PM at Conroe Regional Hospital after a short illness.

Earline was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Lillie Mae Birdwell and brother Delbert Birdwell. She graduated from Willis High School in 1954, where she played the clarinet in the band.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth C. Cline and her daughter Debora Cline Nelms and husband Robert. She is also survived by a brother, Jimmy Birdwell and wife Eloise, sister, Martha Birdwell Matchett and husband Glenn and brother Eddy Birdwell and wife Kathy. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great and great-great grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral service for Earline will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 10:00 am in the First Baptist Church of Grangerland with interment at 2:20 pm at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Houston County, Texas.

Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 56 years; Era Alice Smith Shaw, daughter Neva Louise Shaw Kincaid, son-in-law Charles Joel (Chuck) Kincaid, great grandson Conner Lynn Jeffus.

Mrs. Rose Marie Skalicky, age 102, of Crockett, passed away Thursday, September 16, 2010 in the Houston County Nursing Home. She was born May 13, 1908 in Crockett Prairie, Houston County, Texas and had lived in Crockett most of her lifetime.

 

She was a volunteer for the Houston County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Skalicky was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church in Crockett.
