Captain Luther M. Thompson

(May 26, 1919 - March 11, 1945)

 

United States Army Air Forces was a member of the 879th Bombardment Squadron, 499th Bombardment Group. He died when his airplane (42-24753) departed from Saipan on a combat mission over Nagoya Japan. Almost immediately after take off, the No. 4 engine was observed to be on fire. After the plane crashed, there were no known survivors. Luther was first listed as missing in action and then in June his status was changed to killed in action. He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial Cemetery in Honolulu, Hawaii. At the time of his death, his family was living in Lovelady, Houston County, Texas.

Wadsworth Man is Now Aviation Cadet Luther Thompson

Is Assigned to Rankin Aeronautical Academy

Tulare, Calif. Oct. 13--Luther M. Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Travis Thompson, Wadsworth, has received his appointment as an Aviation Cadet in the U. S. Army Air Corps and has been assigned to the Rankin Aeronautical Academy here for his nine weeks primary training course.

The Rankin Academy, one of the newest of the air corps training schools, is headed by J. G. "Tex" Rankin, famous aviator who taught more than 3500 men and women to fly without a single serious accident.
