EDENS - MADDEN CEMETERY - SAN PEDRO COMMUNITY

About 13 miles NE of Crockett a few miles off FM 2022 - S side of San Pedro Creek. In woods isolated and inaccessible to public, this was site of home of early Houston County settler John Edens.

Indians attacked and killed several women and children October, 1838. The slain were buried about 200 yards from the house site. This was the burial place for John Edens and some relatives and neighbors - later, making about 25 or 30 graves. Evidence today of a few - markers are mostly gone.

A Texas Centennial Marker erected at massacre site 1936. Checked and copied May, 1985, by Howard and Hazel Moore, members Houston County Historical Commission. Written by Hazel Moore.
