ANTIOCH CEMETERY- RATCLIFF

Antioch Cemetery, between Kennard and Ratcliff in Houston County, is located near Coltharp Community. A sign is erected at the site of the Coltharp-Hagerville road intersection directing traffic the 3-1/2 miles to the cemetery. Another sign is just east of the business section of Ratcliff. The distance is about 2 miles and off a National Forest road. Either entry is from a graded county road maintained for school bus travel. It is a scenic detour off Highway 7.

Antioch Cemetery originated after the establishment of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church in 1859. The first grave with engraved marker is dated 1860. The cemetery now contains 303 marked and 84 unnamed graves.

The Antioch Cemetery Association evolved into a caretaker organization, first by being a work crew, then by sponsoring a contract for the working of the grounds.

An endowment fund was begun in 1978 and has built to sufficient proportions as to provide revenue for maintenance.
When the old church building became too dilapidated for safe use it was removed and funds solicited for the erection of a pavilion type structure. Benches and picnic tables are other conveniences. A cyclone type fence was erected around the burial grounds. Dedicated individuals and families have established landscape plantings.
Old cedar trees and crepe myrtle shrubs landmark the spot.

Using the information contained in Houston County Cemeteries a book published by the Houston County Historical Commission, 1977, a committee met March 5, 1985 to update the grave listings. Those working were Wadell Harrison, Frate Pickett and Lillian Gibson.
