BOBBITT CEMETERY, AUGUSTA, TEXAS

The Bobbitt Cemetery is located about 5 miles East of Augusta on F.M. 227. It has about 132 marked graves and about 30 recorded only by numbered slabs with the names in the record book.

The oldest dated grave is that of the infant son of Richard and Francis Johnson birth date Nov. 1, 1876 and death date Dec.8, 1876. However, this is probably not the oldest one. The oldest one is most probably an unmarked or lost grave. Proper records of burials were kept at one time and recorded in a log book located at the front of the cemetery in a rock shelter.

The numbered slabs were made and erected by Henry P. Cutler and Wright Sullivan in an attempt to keep up with the graves. Needless to say, the log book has been used to record the names of the visitors in and this makes it hard to judge where and who is buried there. A list of names, dates, etc., have been taken from the log book and off the graves in an attempt to record the correct history.
