DAVIS FAMILY CEMETERY - Grapeland

Located 6.8 miles NW of Grapeland off FM-1272, this family cemetery was accorded a historical marker in 1979 for the three sons of pioneer Bradford Davis who came from Mississippi in 1838 and was killed by Indians as he checked his bee bait on Mustang Prairie. Those three sons and their families are buried in the Family Cemetery.

In addition to the family members, a number of slaves were buried in the same cemetery. No markers for the burial sites as time has destroyed many of stones used. The Cemetery is also the burial site of:

WINGATE
Mrs. Isabella McCall; who was born in Scotland May 12, 1792 died here Oct. 16, 1867;
           In 1936, the State of Texas erected a granite marker at her grave site, as she was the widow of Edward Wingate who died with Col. James W. Fannin at Goliad, March 27, 1836.

Mrs. Winnie Davis Newman (Mrs. Henry) reviewed the Family Cemetery for the Sesquicentennial edition. She with her late brother Leroy prepared copy for the 1978 edition and assisted with Marker documentation.
