Stafford Reid's first
wife, Partha Della Yates-Reid had died. This picture is of
James Stafford Reid and his second wife, Janie McLane. It
was taken shortly after they married in 1913.
The story passed down
in the Yates/Johnson family was that Stafford Reid liked to take
off from family duties for months at a time with no one knowing
his location. He also had a weakness for the "bottle and
ladies", so when P.D. died, it was generally felt that a
contributing cause was the responsibility of taking care of home
and children virtually alone.
If you will look
closely to the left of Mr. Reid, there is a hand tucked in the
crook of his arm and a "light" area as though someone is
standing there with their hand showing plainly. It
is said that when this tin type picture was new, the figure to
the left could be seen plainly enough that he recognized it to
be his dead first wife. P.D. was a very short woman well
under 5 feet tall so a figure of her height would fit....
When Stafford Reid saw the picture, he was
extremely upset and it is said he changed his way of thinking
about life and family... he never drank again or was unfaithful
to his second wife and he became a model husband, providing for
his family to the best of his abilities thereafter.
