Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe & Rachel Jane Allbright

Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe was a grandnephew of U.S. President James Monroe.

Armistead Thompson Mason Monroe moved to Texas from Virginia in 1842.  He moved his family to Crockett, Houston Co., TX in the 1849 .  He was one of Crockett's pioneer merchants.  He operated a general store on the courthouse square with W.F. Wall and made annual trips to New York for merchandise. He was also involved in real estate dealings.

He built this two-story home on what is now 7th street.  The house was sold to Col. John Long, a Crockett landowner and businessman.

After Long died his widow then married Major John C. Wootters.

The home then sold to Thomas Jones "Tom" Waller and his wife, the former Mary Cornelia Shivers.  Tom Waller had a furniture and undertaking business on the north side of the public square.  At that time it was common practice to hold funerals in homes or churches.  Later when Waller began conducting funerals, he converted the house to a Funeral Home downstairs with his family living quarters situated on the second floor.

After the death of Tom Waller,  the business was sold to a half cousin of his, James Grady "Jim Grady" Waller.  He and his family occupied the 2nd story above the funeral home for many years.
