1. John McConnell (Patrick McConnell1) was born 24 Jan 1818 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland to Patrick and Bridget McConnell, and died 7 Sep 1898 in Crockett, Houston Co., TX. He is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery, Crockett, Houston Co., TX.

He married Mary Jane Dickerson 30 Apr 1852 in Houston Co., TX, daughter of William Dickerson and Mary Jane Ellis. She was born 10 Mar 1833 Nashville, TN, and died 17 Jul 1864 in Crockett, Houston Co., TX.  She is buried in the Glenwood Cemetery, Crockett, Houston Co., TX.

He married Martha Ann Lovelady 1865 in Houston Co., TX, daughter of Cyrus Lovelady and Eliza Ann Allen. She was born 30 Apr 1838 in Mississippi, and died 24 Mar 1924 in Houston Co., TX. She is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Crockett, Houston Co., TX.

MORE ABOUT THE JOHN McCONNELL FAMILY:

John McConnell left Ireland in 1839 and went to Scotland for a few years.  He then went to England where he departed from Liverpool for New York.  From New York City, he went to New Orleans, St. Louis, Shreveport, Nacogdoches, and finally settled in Crockett Sept. 27, 1847 where he opened and operated a blacksmith shop.

He was a successful businessman establishing a large hardware store after the Civil War along with the blacksmith shop.  The hardware store was later operated by his sons, Robert and Dan, until their deaths. 

John McConnell served as County Treasurer for twelve years, a city alderman for four years, and as a deacon in the Baptist Church.  He was active in the Masonic Lodge of Crockett, serving as Worshipful Master in 1863 and 1874, and in the Grand Lodge of Texas.  He was also a Knight Templar in the Palestine Commandery.  He was so highly regarded by his fellow citizens that a public meeting was held at the court house where he was eulogized.  The following resolution commending him was read:  "He exemplified in his life all the best qualities of a citizen and by his sterling worth and eminent usefulness, endeared himself to our people."  Source:  Sue Robert Moritz (History of Houston County)

He married (2) Louella Nations, said to have been born 06 Apr 1863 Kilmichael, MS; died 11 Nov 1959 Crockett, TX; married 20 May 1890 in Houston Co., TX, daughter of D. Starling Nations and Nancy Hewitt.  Louella Nations McConnell is buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park, Crockett, Houston Co., TX beside her husband, John Albert McConnell.

William Van McConnell was a native of Crockett.  He was a charter member of the First Christian Church.  He operated a mercantile store on the square in Crockett and developed a family business that lasted nearly a century.
