Dr. William Henry Denny was born in Richmond,
Virginia, 1822, the son of Richard Samuel and Matilda Frayser
Denny. After graduating from Hampden-Sydney College of Virginia
in 1841 with a degree in Medicine, he moved to Texas and lived
in several locations before moving to old Randolph.
He had, in the meantime, married Susan
Amaranth Gayle, a daughter of Richard Gayle, who later had
purchased one thousand acres of land fifteen miles south-West of
Lovelady on Gayle's Creek.
Dr. Denny later moved to Crockett and
purchased the house, recently razed, that was located at the
corner of Milan and Sixth Street. He formed a partnership with
Dr. James L. Lipscomb, the father of "Dr. Will" who was beloved
by past generations of County citizens.
After the death of his wife, Susan, in 1870,
and after moving to Crockett, Dr. Denny married Frances (Wooten)
Slater, a native of Woodville, and widow of Frank Slater who
lost his life in the Civil War. Dr. Denny was a deeply religious
man, and was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of
Crockett on Highway 7, (now owned by Charles Carter, a lawyer of
Crockett) where he was living at the time of his death.
He had ten children by his first marriage,
four died in infancy. Martha Matilda, Mary Susan, and Anna
Isabella never married. The latter two were school teachers.
